“A Place to Rejuvenate Your Soul”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2013

There are few places that equal Cortijo El Guarda's combination of beauty, serenity and most of all welcome. The Cortijo or farm is akin to an American southwest Hacienda. The farm is recently renovated and expertly decorated. The amenities are all first class. The remote location is stunningly beautiful for miles around, and there are all sorts of activities available.

Most importantly, however, are Hans and Miranda the owners and hosts of the Cortijo. In one day you are treated like family....In two days you are family. They both have a special gift of human connection that turns your stay into a kind of retreat. Leaving was difficult, returning already contemplated. For a piece of Spain most never experience, this is a must stay.

Thanks for writing this kind words about us. We try to make people feel at home, away from home (as they say) but when they feel like family we have even reached the next level. Thanks for making that possible form your side as well.
We hope to see you again and we will be sure that all the quick sand in Andalucia will be cleaned up so that you won't have to worry about that anymore, although as Buddah says: It is better to travel than to arrive......

We stayed here for 5 nights. Corijto is the perfect place to stay when you want to explore the beautiful Andalusia. It is an easy drive to the cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada. All within 2 hours drive. This luxury B&B is situated in a old Spanish farm in the middle of nowhere. 5 very big rooms, which are tastefully decorated. And when you look out your window: olive trees as far as your eyes can see. The Dutch owners Hans and Miranda are the perfect hosts. They make you feel right at home. Everyday they have a fresh breakfast for you. And they give you a lot of personal advices on where to go and what to do. We had a great time here and definitely will come back here!

Room Tip: We looked in two rooms and they both looked perfect.

Dear all, thanks for the compliments. It was great having you here and watching you having a good time in a period where the weather in Andalucia wasn't every day at its best. Even a speeding ticket didn't ruin your day, as long as the beer was cold. We enjoyed watching you 4 having such a great time together. Hasta la vista....

I would love to share my experience of my stay at Cortijgo El Guarda last March. El Guarda is a beautiful Cortijo owned by Hans en Miranda. At my visit I didn`t only enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and my wonderfully decorated room, but even more I want to emphasize the kind and warm attitude of the owners Hans and Miranda. They have this great sense of how to make you feel at home. Not only they welcome you very much in several ways, but whatever you need, they will provide for if possible. As I`m a dog lover they let me take their sweet dog Sam for long walks in the area. It`s a feast for your eyes to walk in the nature in Andalusia in the spring season; nature is utmost beautiful in the hills and you will find al kinds of sights or places of interest in the surroundings of El Guarda, f.e. an arena where the matadors/toreadors train or a wonderful old convict high up on the hills. About the Cortijo I can simply say that it`s a little piece of heaven: at first I found myself a tiny flabbergasted of the beauty of this cortijgo.. it`s authentic and so very well kept. At the same time the owners were capable to bring a warm and classic spirit to the place. A personal touch you will find everywhere you go at El Guarda, not only in the Cortijgo, but even as much brought to you by these very warm and caring people Hans and Miranda. I`m so sure I will visit them and their little piece of heaven again! Lucy McGillivray, Worcestershire, UK.

Room Tip: You don`t need any, all the rooms are more then good at Cortiijo El Guarda

Thanks for your kind words and extensive review.
After you left Sam wasn't satisfied anymore with our usual 45min walks, no he wanted the full monty, 2 hours, like with you. Thanks for that :-))
We hope to see you again and may be we will have the opportunity to go parasailing together, at last.

When planning our trip we decided to stay at a couple of ‘cortijos’ this time. Our first experience just north of Granada was wonderful – a great place with fantastic staff (see review). We left wondering how any place could equal such a standard. But Cortijo El Guarda certainly does. Easy to find once on the 9107 (off the A382) the cortijo is situated just off the road amongst the olive groves.

Hans and Miranda immediately demonstrated why they receive, and deserve, such positive reviews – professionally addressing a small mix-up on arrival. If you are a big city person El Guarda won’t be for you but for anyone who enjoys tranquility in the countryside El Guarda is heaven. Being small (five rooms) the experience is personal, with both Miranda and Hans spending considerable time discussing their search for and efforts to turn the cortijo into a top-notch lodging along with taking an interest in our travels and experiences. From the spotless white-walls to the cobblestones within the cortijo to the pool to the expansive views from the mirador this place is impressive at every turn.

Regrettably we only spent one night at El Guarda and therefore did not have the opportunity to walk about the nearby countryside. We had rearranged our schedule to be at El Guarda one of the nights when dinner was provided (which we understand is two, perhaps three nights a week) and we are so glad we did. . Warm enough to eat outside we enjoyed an excellent meal – and especially thank the chef Montse for preparing vegetarian dishes for my wife on short notice, both of which were attractively presented and delicious. All accompanied by a nice bottle of local Ronda wine it made for a perfect evening. Breakfast the next morning was outstanding, with an extensive variety of breads, pastries, yoghurt, fruit, meat, cheese, torta espanola, and cooked to your order eggs, juice, coffee or tea.

El Guarda is conveniently located in Andalusia, close to Ronda and a number of other quaint white villages, and relatively easy day trips to the coast, Seville, Cordoba and Arcos de la Frontera. A classy cortijo with exceptionally welcoming, friendly and personable hosts, we would go out of our way to stay at El Guarda again if in Andalusia. Gracias Miranda. Gracias Hans.

We are always grateful when our guests take the time to write a review as we all know the power of the instrument (and they can be good for ones ego as well....). Some reviews add something extra like descriptions of what-to do or are written in a special way. This one has it all for us, even honestly mentioning a mistake we made. Thanks for that.

From the moment we arrived till the minute we left we were made to feel very welcome by Miranda and Hans who were the perfect hosts throughout our 7 days stay in this beautiful Cortijo which is stylish, elegant and always beautifully presented. We had a superior room which again surpassed our expectations with every little detail perfect for our stay, the bed was very comfy, his & hers robes, toiletries, stylish furniture and always perfectly clean. During our stay we enjoy all the outside areas like the pool, sun terrace and the dinning area in which we enjoyed our breakfasts and 3 evening meals. The evening meals were cooked by a local chef and we were treated to some fantastic traditional dishes washed with some lovely wines selected by Hans, again attention to detail made the whole experience outstanding. Hans and Miranda provided locations to visit, bar and restaurants and stunning scenic routes to drive, a visit to Ronda, Zahara & Grasalema are a must with stunning vistas, Tapas bars and excellent restaurants. Our lasting memory of our wonderful stay is without doubt Hans and Miranda our wonderful hosts, they can’t do enough for you to ensure that your stay is perfect. The final word has to go to Sam the dog who we took on walks through the Olive groves & asparagus fields and very quickly became our friend.

We have really enjoyed taking care of you and watching the both of you enjoy El Guarda and everything it and its surroundings have to offer. We never had guests before that got up in the middle of the night making photographs of the stars above the Cortijo. Hope we will see the outcome of that exercise one day.
Hopefully until one of your next trips to Jaen!

We have just spent 3 nights at this delightful Cortijo to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We got a little lost trying to find the Cortijo and to enforce the helpfulness of Miranda, she drove out to find us and escort us to our "home" for the next 3 nights. We stayed in room 2, a deluxe room which was spacious and with wonderfully comfortable beds and pillows. The food was outstanding. We had breakfast each day which was varied and perfectly cooked. We also had 2 evening meals which were beautifully presented and with top quality ingredients. The Cortijo is immacuate and the surrounding countryside is breathtaking.

However, the stars of the show are Hans and Miranda who just cannot do enough for their guests and make every aspect of your stay a complete joy. A real 6 star experience. We will certainly go back.

We normally don't escort our guests to El Guarda - as we have the local police taking care of that - but in order to be sure that the 20th wedding anniversary is one to remember, we love to go the extra mile (or 3).
Thanks for your kind words about El Guarda and us. We are sooooo happy that Sam has been left out of the review this time and that it is us that are stars of the show for once :-))
Serious it was great to have you here and an honour for us that you chose to have your anniversary with at our place.
Hasta pronto.

The warm welcome by Hans and Miranda and their dog Sam was the start of an unforgettable weeks stay in Cortijo el Guarda. The accommodation is beautifully restored and elegantly decorated and still has modern amenities (good wifi, hot showers, etc). We had a very comfortable and spacious room with a worldclass bed and there was more than enough room for the crib. Even though the weather was a bit cold and wet for March, we had a wonderful time because of the warm and cosy municipal rooms, long walks in the beautiful environment with dog Sam, and wonderful dinners at the Cortijo (3 nights a week). From Alcala del Valle you can visit all of Andalusia with great tour advice from the owners for the best scenic routes. Although the accommodation is amazing, the atmosphere is what sets this guesthouse apart from other places. Hans and Miranda make it a home for every guest. We will definitely return.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 2, which is very spacious and can hold a crib

You found us amazing, we found you even more amazing. The holiday mood never changed although the weather was disappointing, your 7 months old girl sometimes starting singing at 04.00 am and you could have done with a bit more sleep now and then. It was a pleasure to have you as our guests. Hasta pronto!
