“Great for a weekend in Andorra”
Reviewed March 26, 2012

We had a lovely stay at this friendly, comfortable hotel. Maybe the restaurant isn't four star but the staff were all really friendly and helpful, the room was fine - lovely and quiet with a nice balcony, the spa was wonderful - although the staff should tell guests the cost (10 euros which is definitely worth it) as it's not written anywhere - and the location is very good - a couple of minutes to the bus stop to Arcalis or to the gondala to Pal.

This is a handy hotel if the snow conditions are good in Pal Arinsal. The ski capsule is in front of the hotel, and you can hire a locker to leave your equipment there. The spa is very nice, but the food is horrible, and the hotel is not up to 4-star standards. The breakfast has a lot of options, but they are all tasteless and bad quality. The rooms get too hot at night, and given that it's all central heating, you have no say in your room temperature. All in all, stay here only if you know you'll be skiing at Pal Arinsal, otherwise, try elsewhere.

Nice above average premium hotel.

Located on a main road which gets busy at rush hours (which don't last long there). The town of La Massana seems to be used as a bit of a rat run by people working in the villages and resorts higher up and consequently it (the town not the hotel) feels a bit grubby (and there are a lot of traffic fumes during the rush hour times). Plenty of shops/restaurants/bars around but personally I'd rather stay somewhere a bit smaller & quieter.

Can't really fault the hotel. Desk staff are very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping is excellent. The restaurant is very good. Dined there twice & both times everything was magnificent (although somewhat expensive by Andorran standards, but youget what you pay for). Breakfasts are buffet style and also very good. Could perhaps benefit from a bit more variety of the cooked options (boiled eggs, scambled eggs and bacon were the only items on offer) but there was plenty of other lovely things to be had (almond croissants to diet for). Coffee is bought to your table by default each morning before you even ask and is very good. Served in large jugs with a jub of hot frothy milk alongside. No tea was offered but I dare say they would provide if asked.

There is a gondolla just opposite and choice of ski hire shops nearby. The hotel offers a discounted lift pass and you can get vouchers for these from reception. Plenty of ski lockers and parking (some of it covered).

Nice big bar with an open log fireplace. The barman, who I was told is new, is a bit slow and not very friendly. I spoke to him in Spanish and tipped him well but his demeaner didn't really change. Other guests also commented on that (one nicknamed him "Lurch")

WIFI is free (no password required) and for the most part worked well in the bar and lounges (although it dropped out twice for a few hours each time). Not worth bothering in the rooms, it detects a signal but you'd be better off with semophore).

My bill was quite high. It was Spanish half term so I guess rates were hiked for that. I was happy to pay it as I had a good time and no real complaints, but next time I'll choose a hotel in a quieter/prettier location. I'll still visit this one for dinner and drinks though.

Hotel Rutllan is convenience, comfort and character all in one. The staff is accommodating and friendly. The location is fantastic. located in walking distance to the gondola! Wonderful breakfast buffet. We enjoyed our visit at the Rutllan and would go there and nowhere else while skiing in Andorra. I suppose that summertime is equally nice there. We couldn't say a negative thing about this hotel.

Having just spent a week at the Hotel Rutllan in La Massana, which I booked directly with the hotel, at exceptionally reasonable rates, I have nothing but praise for the staff, from the reception, dining room to the chamber maids, the hotel is spotless, the rooms warm, spacious and quiet despite the gondola passing every few minutes during the day. It stops at 5pm. ( 08:00 - 17:00 pm daily )
My only complaint is that in Andorra it is still permitted for people to smoke indoors, therefore the main bar fills up early evening with smoke, the non smoking area is very small and not very personal.
The hotel has free wifi, however could not get it to function in the bedroom but functioned fine in the lobby. they also have two computers which cost 1 Euro for 15 minutes, which I ended up using.
The hotel has a spa and gymnasium, these facilities we did not use as at 10 Euros per person per day was a little steep.
Free indoor parking was a bonus, however get there early as there is only 8 spaces, there is outdoor parking up the road.
We stayed on Half board, the chef, was very good with a choice of two different dishes each night, however if nothing appealed they were always willing to grill something else, the food was always piping hot. The dessert chef was a little annoying guarding the desserts with his life, and made you feel slightly in awe of asking for a little more.
The hotel was ideally located literally just across the road from the gondola, the hotel had free ski lockers, the bonus was that we bought our ski passes each day and if you didn't want to go skiing on any day you didn't buy your pass, the hotel had an exceptional rate of 20 Euros per person per day. In fact due to a bad cold, I only skied 3 of the 5 days we were there, I bought 2 gondola passes to join my husband for lunch at the gondola station they cost only 10 Euros however if you have a car you can actually drive to the top where the gondola stops.
A good point to remember the ski passes do not include insurance, this needs to be purchased at the gondola station and costs 3,80 per day, well worth it if you get hit or have an accident on the mountain as it covers full insurance.
Unfortunately I needed a visit to the Doctors, I went to Dr. Mireles whom is just across the road, he was exceptionally good and very reasonable at 23 Euros, the chemists however unless you have holiday insurance are very expensive.
La Massana a funny non descript village, as we were out of high season it was very quiet, we found a good pizzeria - Angelo's and a quirky pub called the Bohemia.
The skiing area pal, was brilliant, the slopes wide and not difficult, again as it hadn't snowed several of the runs were closed, but my husband found enough to keep him happy and improved his technique Arinsal on the other hand was a disappointment with two very long runs which were grey as the snow wasn't great. My husband joined a group lesson and thoroughly enjoyed himself, they did a few off piste runs, I on the other hand had a rather expensive private lesson as it was only 1 hour, but it helped, as I asked for an English instructor.
My favourite of all was Arcalis, a natural beauty approx 30 minutes drive from La Massana, snow conditions were great, the slopes fabulous, plenty of blues, reds and even a green run from the very top to the bottom, I would suggest wearing a helmet, as there is not much respect from snow borders on the slopes.
Having skied Grandvalira for many years, would I return to La Massana, Yes ! the ski area Pal is very pretty with the forest lined runs, probably I would opt for B&B as we felt tied to dinner every evening and I did fancy a Cheese fondue the odd evening.

Hopeless management. They do not understand or value their customers. Everything seems to be problematic and a bother for them. The only charming experience is that of the waiters!

The hotel was very nice. Stayed here as part of a side trip from Barcelona. The location was good with a nice choice of restaurants nearby. The tourist information office is close by and there is a grocery store nearby which allowed us to buy drinks and snacks for our room which we could keep in the in room fridge. The room was hot and we couldn't figure out how to turn the radiator down so just left the balcony door open when we were in. The price is very good and although we had requested a room without a balcony to get a cheaper rate, we were given a room with a balcony which we enjoyed. Overall, a decent place to stay in the fall. Free in room wireless but it was difficult to connect (maybe because of the mountains?). Free parking.
