“Excellent hotel in an excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

We were a total of four norwegian families, with kids and teenagers, travelling together (17 all in all), to do four days of skiing in Grandvalira, Andorra.
Two nights before our arrival we received an e-mail, explaining that the whole floor containg spa-area, leisure area, games room, media room etc., unfortunately had to be closed due to a technical problem (which turned out to be a fire in the spa-area). As a compensation we were offered free passes to the Icepalace down the street (with ice rink, swimmingpool, gym-area etc). This did of course make us very sceptical and we considered cancelling our booking and staying at another hotel. We never-the-less decided to try it out since our main object was the skiing - and as itturned out - we didn't regret that decision for one second!
All our many requests regarding which children should stay in which rooms together, who should have connecting rooms, triple rooms, rooms with twin beds - or not - and so forth, were professionally taken care of and fullfilled without one mistake or problems of any kind. (Respect!)The hotel also has its own garage underneath the hotel, which is very practical (even though you can find cheaper public outdoor parking close by).
The hotel exterior and interior is very appealing and tasteful, whichs gives a nice and welcoming atmosphare. The staff is extremely helpful and pleasant to deal with, both in the restaurant, the reception and the bar. The hotel lacks absolutely nothing when it comes to service, and that alone fully compensated for the lack of spa etc. We were all given very friendly, helpful and efficient treatment during our four nights at the hotel. The skipasses were ready when they were supposed to, all seating arrangements in the restaurant were organized, the wifi functioned well, the food was just as it should be - ample and of good quality and variation, the young bartender made the most elaborate GT's imaginable - all in all - everything went incredibly smoothly! If I should mention one negative thing, though; it is the much to bright lights in the restaurant... A dimmer would come in handy... On the other hand - that is the only negative thing we could come up with! Regarding Canillo; it is a small and rather quiet village (at least compared to Soldeu, which is more of a extremely busy and hectic street, than a village). Our teenagers found Canillo to be a bit slow (which we,the parents, were quite pleased with). But Soldeu isn't further away than a short taxi ride, when the teenagers finally managed to negotiate themselves into an evening out. The hotel is situated very close to the gondola which brings you up into the skiing area, and you can't really ask for any better location in Canillo. If you prefer an quicker access into the main skiing area, and a possibility to ski all the way down to your village (and hotel), then Soldeu or El Tarter might be better locations. Having both stayed in Canillo and skied Grandvalira a couple of years ago, we knew what we could expect from Canillo and the slopes etc., but we were anyhow pleased to se that both Canillo and Grandvalira, has developed very positively. After having skied many big skiresorts in the Alps and Dolomites (Saalbach-Hinterglem-Leogang, Bad Gastein, Cortina etc.), Grandvalira is still my favourite spot because of its share size, the excellent variation of slopes, the huge skiable off-pist area, the food (yes - there are some real gems of restaurants hidden in the slopes), and the level of service. The Andorrans working in the skiresort are pleased that we are visiting them - and they show it!

Room Tip: We were given rooms towards the terrasse behind the hotel, which was very quiet and pleasant. This i...

Clean, big rooms, nice spa and games room and amazing breakfast and dinner. The hotel is 3 minutes walk to the bubble and staff are nice. All you need after a nice day skiing. Breakfast has everything you could imagine, eggs made in front of you and the most delicious bakery goods. It only missed freshly squeezed orange juice to be perfect. Dinner is even better - you won't be disappointed if you stay here. I will e back.

After a good day on the slopes, you need a decent meal to replenish your energies. Font D'argent seriously delivered. Top quality food and as much of it as you want. Evening meals are essentially a combination of good quality buffet options as well as a chef ready to grill you fresh fish or meat. And the starters...yum. Struggling to decide if I preferred the breakfast or the dinner. One minor niggle was that they don't allow you to bring a bag into breakfast as it seems they are expecting everyone to steal all the food. Reasonably perceptive mind you!

The rooms were spacious, clean and far superior to your typical ski hotel/chalet. The spa room was a welcome relaxation at the end of the day. Again, one minor niggle being the necessity to wear a quite ridiculous head cap before you can get in the jacuzzi. And they make you go upstairs back to reception to get one??!!

Sort out those two seriously minor issues and this would be truly spectacular. I'm giving it 5 stars anyway as was so impressed by everything as a whole. Enjoy!

I stayed here with my thirteen year old son for a skiing trip. Every member of staff went out of their way to make this a great stay. Having booked we then read the reviews that talk about cigarette smoke. However, the hotel is now totally no smoking except for an outdoor garden area next to the cocktail bar, in fact the standards of cleanliness were extremely high.Although we are vegetarian we tend to eat fish when on holiday because we get fed up with pizza. In fact the food choice is really good with hot vegetarian options always available. Great location for the ski lift. When the cocktail barman is on duty it is worth ordering a gin and tonic just to watch the care, attention and detail that goes into getting it just right. .

Can't fault this hotel. We went for 4 days and got a half-board deal. The rooms were big and immaculate. The breakfast buffet had everything you could want, including an espresso machine, egg bar for omelettes and fresh fruit. Dinner was even better, with fish and meat dishes cooked in front of you on the grill, or stews and veg options and about 10 dessert options to choose from (or have a bit of all of them!). Staff were helpful. It is about a 3-5 minute walk up to the Canillo bubble cable-car. It's an easy way to be part of the larger ski area, but being in a small village. There is also a cafe / bar, a car park and a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi area. I'll only rate is down on location, as ideally on a ski trip you want to be ski in / ski out, whereas here you need to walk a bit (minor point)

Room Tip: Top floor may be quieter as it is on a main road. Were were on the 4th (top floor) and there was no...

Me and my family tried Canillo as ski resort last week (Jan 2013). We choose Font d'Argent due to its excellent recommendations and didn’t disappoint.
This charming hotel has a unique combination of many advantages as ski vacation base:

1.Modern and well decorated
2.Big and comfortable rooms
3.Nice and cozy spa for relaxing in the Jacuzzi after long and freezing day on the mountains.
4.Wide selection and very good food
5.The hotel located just 50 m from the gondola to the slopes! (In the gondola building located Pirot- ski equipment rental shop- very recommended. Perfect service including option to store the equipment in the end of every day- very convenient. )
6.The hotel staff is very warm and helpful. They helped us with every wish and the restaurant staff even bought and cooked special food for our son who eats only few things…
7.20 m from bus station to Andorra city and other ski villages in Andorra.
8.No one need more…

About the ski - after exploring for a week the Grandvalira we can recommend the site as amazing site with more than 200km of slopes, nice views and perfect very wide slopes for beginners and intermediates. Unlike Canillo, in Soldeu village you can ski directly to the village with no need of the gondola to come back but you can't find hotel like Font d'Argent…
Enjoy!!

A week long stay which was very good indeed. The rooms were great (other than the fact that they can be very smokey) and the bathrooms particularly good (separate baths and showers). The whole hotel was very pleasant and the spa was a definite bonus after a day on the slopes. Staff were helpful and everything was efficient.

Breakfasts were great and we enjoyed the 'cooked specially for you' part. As well as this the evening buffet had a good spread of interesting foods.

The hotel's own parking is a complete rip-off. There is parking about - a few free places - grab one if it becomes free (these are places with white paint markings) or there are lots of blue places which cost 3 euros a day (saving 10 euros a day on the hotel parking).

The hotel is well situated for the gondola and Canillo itself is a lovely little place.

We got a very good Half Board deal on hotels 4 U - it was much cheaper than on booking.com
