Description: Welcome to the Dovecote Inn on Alders Road in Capel, near Tonbridge in Kent. We are a warm and friendly traditional country pub with a cosy atmosphere providing good homely food, fine wine and superb real ales at the centre of the local community. Situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty near Five Oak Green, we are only a short drive from Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and Paddock Wood. We have a selection of real ales served directly from casks behind the bar. Our regular ales are Harveys Sussex Best Bitter and Gales HSB, along with a constantly changing repertoire of guest ales. We have been listed in The Good Beer Guide for seventeen years. Thatchers or Old Rosie cider along with a selection of draught lager, stout and cider are complemented by various bottled options. A fine selection of wines is available by the bottle or glass, along with a typical selection of spirits and soft drinks. Join us for our lunchtime and evening food menus, along with varying specials and desserts boards providing good value, freshly cooked no-nonsense homely food. Sit in our dedicated restaurant area, secluded snug or tables throughout the bar in a cosy and comfortable rural pub environment. Warm yourself beside the log fire in the autumn & winter and enjoy alfresco dining in our patio area in the spring and summer months.

It is pubs like the Dovecote which many overseas visitors expect England to be filled with but which, sadly, are becoming ever more difficult to find. It has everything that we want in a pub including excellent real beer, indeed the Harveys is one of the best pints in the area. The atmosphere is relaxed & welcoming, the seating is comfortable & the tables are sufficiently high to accommodate those of us with long legs. The menu is fairly short but the meals are of good quality, hot & reasonably priced. The pub also doesn't have many of the things that we are happy to avoid such as televisions & loud music. It is a pleasure to be able to enjoy a quiet conversation with friends without such distractions.

Having tried to get through by phone for a few days (knowing we needed to book for a Friday) and not being able to get through, we took a chance and turned up on Friday night to see if we could get a table. It transpired that the phone lines have been down following the storm and although I could hear the phone ringing my end, nothing happens at the pub! Not that you'd notice though as it was very busy as usual.
We eat here quite regularly and as nowhere else comes close in the Tonbridge area (with the exception of Turmeric Gold although completely different fayre) and once again we were not disappointed. I had the Vegetarian Rosti, a mouth watering combination of various cheeses, garlic mushrooms, tomatoes on a bed of Rosti. Absolutely delicious. My partner had the Steak and Stilton Pie, a huge portion that he demolished. I'm a bit confused by previous reviews about the beer - yes they're in barrels protruding from the wall but they are true beers and changed regularly to give variety. It's not a lager pub and caters more for beer drinkers with Harveys as the staple beer. Given the amount that was being poured on our visit throughout the pub I think we can safely say it's a beer drinkers paradise! The staff are always friendly and keen to make sure we had a good time, I just feel for them having to go back to the good old days with manual credit card receipts as the phone lines and card machine line are down..............let's hope they get back up and running soon. If you haven't been before, you won't be disappointed and we'll be coming back time and again for the foreseeable future!

We decided to take a chance given the reviews and went on a Wednesday evening recently. Cannot fault the friendliness, knew it was a "dining" pub and sure enough there were lots of people. More restaurant atmosphere than pub.

Couldn't see much of a menu on the website and when we got there found it was a great place if you wanted traditional fare, lots of pies, steamed meat puds and the speciality were rostis. Unfortunately, we were less keen on meat, and found the mushroom stroganoff a bit lacking in mushrooms, a duck breast stir fry was ok but not very exciting. So i guess a great place for some, good selection of beer, my pint was excellent. So just not what we wanted, but can see why it is so popular, although cannot see why best in Tonbridge.
