“4 pleasurable days at Mugilu”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We spent out 3rd wedding anniversary at Mugilu. It is a cosy place nestled far away from traffic and noise. The only sounds you hear are those of nature.

Chandan and Sapna and their staff are extremely warm and hospitable and make you feel at home right away. The facilities are basic but clean and well maintained and are to be admired for their simplicity and effectiveness.

The meadows next to Mugilu are wonderful to walk through, sit and read or just sit and take the beauty of nature in.

I would recommend this for a weekend getaway any day

Srinivas

I usually look at positives in any place i go and all my ratings on tripadvisor have been better. But, have to give this one poor rating.

Mugilu has a big identity crisis. Is it a Home Stay or a resort. It surely isnt a Home stay - cottages away from the house; dining and longue away from cottage and house; a feel of a resort for sure. But its not a resort as there are no comforts at all - its just basic place. (And they claim not to be a resort in their rooms too).

Location - A great location in midst of grass lands. BUT, the view from room is blocked by lots of dense trees.

Food - The lesser said the better. Food was not tasty as home food, nor a good spread as a resort. The spred was small like you would get at home but the quality of the food was bad. It was just edible. When you travel, you want the food to be yummy, but sadly, this food wasnt. I wanted an ommelette for my breakfast; and i didnt get till i finished breakfast. Seemed like this needed the owners aproval.

Service - OK. They have couple of locals who try their best. But, they can get away as its supposed home stay!!!

Room - Very basic but clean.

To sum it up, this place isnt a place which gives you value for money. I think its way overpriced for everything there.

I have been at many home stays in the past which charged as much or more. But they have been real home stays.

Chandan was nice - helped a with booking, directions and gave medicines. But, i need to give my honest feedback.

Hi Mr. Nayyar....It looks like you planned your trip in a hurry & landed up in the wrong place,You clearly have not gone through our website, which clearly explains what Mugilu is all about. Had you done that, you would not have visited us in the first place. FYI, we're classified as a Home stay by the Karnataka Tourism Department, where in the owners have to stay in the property & not necessarily have rooms in their home. As such we have to call ourselves that. There is no in between a "home stay" & " Resort" . This is what most home stays are in India. Also, We have a clear eco policy wherein we donot believe in chopping trees & making way for a view. As mentioned, we have a FAQs page on our website, which you should have gone thro before making a booking.

We stayed at Mugilu for 2 nights from 16th Aug, our main apprehension was how our 15 month old daughter will cope with a plantation stay, but once we reached Mugilu and our daughter met Shunti, Kicchu and Shervo, she needed nothing more. As for us, Chandan was an old friend and it was nice catching up with him, Sapna too is a wonderful host and together they run a lovely place.
Mugilu is set in idyllic surroundings and a short walk takes you to fantastic locales, the rolling green hills just outside the gate make even a hardcore couch potato want to take a hike.
Food served is tasty and very homely, the stillness broken by the chirping of birds and insects is soothing and the place is great to unwind.
Chandan knows some lovely places to drive out to and we even got a chance to do a bit of offroading in the Hemavathy basin.

We felt that the monsoons or winter would be the best time to visit Mugilu, and we really enjoyed our stay here.

A huge thanks to the staff at Mugilu and to Sapna and Chandan for making our holiday so enjoyable, we look forward to being back.
Regards,
Srihari

We chose Mugilu as a stopover on our way from Bangalore to Udupi. And we were fortunate to get accommodation at very short notice. The roads leading to Mugilu are a little narrow, but that is part of the charm. The directions are quite easy to follow and we reached there just as an August downpour engulfed us. The cottage we were in was quite clean. It had a big room with a King bed, a huge attached bath and a nice sitout.
Mugilu is surrounded by grassy meadows and sloping hills and for the first time on a vacation, we woke up at 6:30 to go on a walk. We were were thoughtfully plied with tea and biscuits before our walk. We were accompanied by Shunti, the really friendly dog who captivated our kids (2.5 and 5.5). The walk left us feeling invigorated.
The helpers are very friendly and knowledgeable. And were around when we needed something. . The food is simple and a little bland. But then I am foodie and a little picky about food.
On the whole Mugilu is worth the stay especially for the surrounding hills and meadows. There is nothing much to do at the homestay itself and it could get boring if you are stuck indoors during the rains.

I am glad 'we' chose 'Mugilu' of the many places we reviewed. Taking off 'together' on our first road trip... and landing in 'heaven'. What more could we ask for. Fantastic 'hosts', food cooked from the 'heart', the villa was just perfect... the 'scenery' great... and i loved being able to sit out on the balcony and gaze out, which i can only describe as 'serene'. 'We' (John and I) personally thank you for a beautiful stay, we are coming back soon. I recommend 'Mugilu' to anyone who can appreciate a "great place to stay". cheers/ann

Room Tip: Any villa will give you a sense of belonging :) it is personally designed to make you comfortable :)

We stayed at Mugilu during our road trip to Mangalore for a day. The villas are simple yet spacious, ideal for couples and probably small families. The best feature of the villa is the full length glass door that opens in to the balcony for an uninterrupted view of the plantation. Just awesome! This facility has a natural feel with a character of its own.

The natural stone floored bathroom is quite roomy and basic. The linen was spotless and fresh, completely up to the mark. The evening walk by the plateau is beautiful and relaxing.
The common dining area has a few casual dining tables and chairs made out of natural coffee wood.

The mini library space on the side is the best space to grab a book and a beer or alcohol of your choice.

The food and hospitality of the staff are truly fantastic.

It sure is a magnificent place with magnificent views and I highly recommend it.

Thank you Sapna & Chandan for being such a great host!

To explore serenity all it takes is less than 5 hours from Bangalore! yes, we spent a good 2 days of our life with nature and were hosted admirably. A must see place! Not just the host but the staff are equally warm and make you feel at home.

Room Tip: All three cottages are equally awesome. Just talk to the hosts and be rest assured.
