“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2013

Booked 3 rooms for a weekend stay because we were in Cardiff on the Saturday evening.

It looks fantastic from the outside - lovely buildings / lovely grounds / everything.
But inside it all looks a bit tired, run down and very much in need of investment.

Our rooms were in a separate building round the back and although it looked a lot newer than the main building, the rooms were very dull and dingy.

But we had arrived late so were glad just to get some sleep although this wasn't that easy because of creaking floors from the rooms above and dripping taps.

Staff in the bar at lunchtime on the Saturday and late Sunday morning ranged from invisible to miserable.

Breakfast was a bit of a shambles.
There seemed to be a shortage of staff and there was food spilled on the floor in both rooms so you had to be very careful walking about.

The rest of the family used the spa on the Sunday morning and thought it was ok - a comment was that this was where the money seemed to have been spent!!

The one ray of light was the girl on reception (Rachel possibly?) who was really cheerful and helpful.

Room Tip: Avoid the separate building round the back!

Thank you for your review and i am so sorry about your breakfast. Try as we may everyone comes down at the same time which puts tremendous strain on our resources.

I have the team looking into this matter urgently so we can find a better way to cope.

Thanks and sorry

dinner excellent but the evening was spoiled by having to trek such a long way back to the annex in the rain (they had not one spare umbrella to loan us! actually that`s not quite correct, a helpful waiter searched around and offered me a child`s size one which was only broken in three places)
The lights along the path were all broken so be sure to take a good lantern with you.
Oh, the heater in the room did not work either.
So next time I shall take an umbrella, torch and portable heater , but hang on there won`t be a next time!

Room Tip: Those dreaded words "you`re in the annex!" Take a good umbrella and a torch! It is a ver...

Thanks for your review and thyis awful weather really does throw a spanner in the works. Who would have thought that in June we would be dishing out all our umbrellas and having to put portable heaters in bedrooms. We have checked the heater and it does work, and the work on the external lighting replacement is nearly complete.

Hope we do see you again.

Kindest regards

David

I stayed at the hotel recently as I attended a wedding. The wedding was amazing the public areas are fantastic. The food was beautiful as was the service and the staff were helpful and friendly. The only thing that let the hotel down was the room I stayed in as a wedding guest I had a wedding rate however the room was out dated and tired looking. The bathroom although clean really needs updating. Overall it was a fantastic stay but I was disappointed with the room and wouldnt stay that again.

My sister and I took advantage of the current kgbdeal on offer and booked a night here on Monday 27th May 2013. I would recommend upgrading the room from the standard annex room to one in the main hotel building as they are much larger and more convenient. We paid a supplement of £30.00 to upgrade to a king suite which was beautiful. The room was on the first floor, beautifully presented and decorated in neutral cream and red colours. Bathroom was modern with a walk-in shower, a bath and hose and a separate toilet. I would recommend booking treatments in advance directly with the spa team as you get a 10% discount. Maz performed our treatments when we arrived at the hotel. I would recommend the aromatherapy full body massage!
Well oiled and ready for the spa, we proceeded to the women's changing rooms. The spa is exactly like the photographs, an elegant marble Greek theme throughout. As far as the spa is concerned though, it goes downhill from there! The jacuzzi is cold and even on the highest setting isn't powerful enough. Don't put your hand near the jets either, you may get a half eaten yellow boiled sweet in your palm! The main pool was probably about five degrees colder than the jacuzzi and just as shallow! My sister is 5'10 and she could crawl across the length of the pool on her knees and still keep her head above water! On a plus note, the sauna and steam room are adequate. We left the spa for dinner and thought we'd shower in the changing rooms and go straight to the restaurant. That went down the pan as soon as we got into the cubicle! The showers in the changing rooms were freezing cold. One mother escorted her two young daughters back to their room to shower there before we decided to give up waiting for the water to warm up! Real poor show.
We eventually got to the restaurant after returning to our room for a shower. We could not fault the food or the service at all. It was absolutely brilliant! We took the liberty of arranging breakfast in bed the following morning too. Nothing like a Tuesday off work watching a family feud on Jeremy Kyle with full English breakfast in bed!
If you're looking for some time away with nice surroundings and pleasant service then this is the place for you. If you're a fitness fanatic and your motivator is the spa/gym, don't bother. The equipment in the gym is old and I don't know how they can justify the spa days for £25.00 because I've seen better spa's in three star hotels in Cardiff.
I have to mention the receptionist, Ashleigh as she really exceeded our expectations. I dealt with her on the phone during the booking process and when we arrived she checked us into our room earlier than 3pm which gave us time to drop off our luggage before our pre-arranged spa treatments. What really impressed me was that she took interest in our plans for the following day when we checked out. When we said we were going to Cwmbran shopping centre for the day, she wrote us a page of directions through the lanes and past the golf club so we wouldn't need to use the satnav which would take us the long way around. This saved us time and money! Ashleigh really is a credit to the team and deserves recognition.
Overall, a good stay and we would return for the service if not for the spa!

Room Tip: Book the main hotel. Room 17 was lovely.

Stayed here recently for one night B&B.

The hotel is in some very nice grounds - you can see why its a Wedding venue. The room was in the main building and whilst comfortable it was very dated and need some decoration. I ate in the bar and would not do that again - food quality was very poor, not much of it and seriously over-priced for what it was. There is a very nice pub about 1 mile away going towards USK - I had a drink in their and would certainly eat there as a preference.

Breakfast was dreadful - some nice bacon and fried egg, but the rest (mushroom, sausage, black pudding, beans, hash) was either cold, stale, old, or rubbery - I left most of it, - its not what you want to set you up for the day.

Staff polite and helpful - I did get an apology on checkout but by then its too late.

We are an engaged couple and wanted a reasonably priced trip away as we save for our wedding later in the year, combining this trip with a visit to see my grandad in a care home nearby. Thus, we bought a KGB deal for £99 for this place, which included a bottle of wine in room on arrival, use of spa, overnight stay (in the garden rooms at the back of hotel) and breakfast.

As you drive in the grounds are lovely, especially on the day we arrived (Sat 25th May 2013) when they were bathed in sunshine. Secluded and tucked away, and some pleasant grounds to have an afternoon drink outside. Not sure about the salmon pink colour for the buildings mind you, although my missus thought it was ok!

Reception greeting was friendly and warm. We drove around to our room at the back, which we found after a brief search, so could benefit from greater signposting. The room was of a decent size, large bed - although it was 2 x single beds pushed together! TV choice was good, with all freeview channels. Complimentary tea/coffee/biscuits and reasonably clean bathroom. The plastic toilet seat and IKEA bathroom mirror though made it feel like the place may have fallen on harder times recently!

As others have mentioned, we had a wait to get a drink at the bar - maybe they could have a bell or something which waiting guests could ring for service? We had to wait for someone to come from out back. The spa is ok - medium size pool, cold Jacuzzi (strange), sauna and I guess what is meant to be a steam room, but had very little steam in! The changing room showers were ice cold - it was the subject of discussion amongst everyone changing! If they are trying to save costs on heating water, they could just have showers with push on/off buttons so guests don't leave them running?

So to dinner. Pâté starter was ok (you can't really go wrong with pâté), but my steak was over-cooked at medium, more well done to be honest. The restaurant was packed and I did not want to wait so did not complain, but if we did not have the KGB deal I would have done as it was supposed to cost £19.50! The chips that accompanied it did not look freshly made either, they were like oven chips.

The food was all a bit disappointing to be honest - breakfast the next day was not high quality ingredients, especially the sausages - very average and hardly befitting of a spa getaway resort and this lovely location, where you'd think they could get high quality local produce from Welsh farmers etc. The hotel is a Best Western chain and I wonder if they have to purchase from some big suppliers?

Also we arrived for breakfast at 9.40am, expecting it to have died down a bit (it is served until 10am) but it could only be described as chaotic! There were no clean tables for us to sit at, we had to clear one ourselves as we were told to 'sit anywhere and help yourself' to the buffet breakfast. There was one older, I guess senior, waiter and the rest were all teenage girls. He seemed to get increasingly frustrated as they kept spilling milk, juice and food on the floor as they tidied up!

To sum up, the location and grounds are great. The rooms are reasonably comfortable. The spa is ok but in need of some maintenance. The service at front of house is good, but not elsewhere. The food is not befitting of the venue and needs some serious consideration. I would have been very disappointed to pay full price for this and it makes you wonder whether by offering such deals they are struggling. It seems like a few corners are being cut and to be honest, it shows. A shame really, as it has the potential to be very special.
