This was an amazing experience I will never forget! We met up at the base in Charleston and were provided everything needed in wetsuit gear including a helmet. Wear just your swimsuit underneath for comfort. We took a quick bus ride to a small tram that took us on a pleasant ride through rain forest to the cliffs of the Nile River Canyon, in beautiful Paparoa National Park. We hiked with lg tubes in wetsuits through rain forest trails, across a suspension bridge and climbed many steps to reach the entrance to the cave system. Once inside the cave, it is pitch black so the lanterns on our helmets lit the way. Very cool, large, ancient stalactites and stalagmites throughout the upper dry levels of the cave- Large cavernous areas and narrow passageways- incredible to walk through and experience firsthand! As we hiked down to the lower levels of the cave, we came to a narrow branch of the Nile River where we tossed in our tubes and floated slowly down the cave passage in a wondrous awe inspiring journey beneath a galaxy of zillions of glowworms high above us on the cavernous ceiling. We were mesmerized by the incredible beauty of this experience. It would have been amazing just walking and looking up at the glowworms. Imagine floating gently downstream without any effort, head resting back, gazing up at this wonder which continued around every bend in breathtaking silence. As we reached the cave's exit I wished I could slow time . . . We then continued floating down the Nile River outside which turned into rapids! Gentle but exilerating! Our guide was very informative and a lot of fun. He took pictures throughout which were later posted on the website for us to access. I highly recommend this caverafting with the glowworms!!

The scenery when doing the caving is amazing and well worth it.

The price is fairly steep, but on par with similar activities.

A good standard of fitness is required

The Good:
Amazing glow worms and cave formations
Friendly, informative guide
Beautiful surroundings
Cave photos provided free.

The Bad
Rafting is a bit of a misnomer, it is 85% walking through the caves carrying your tube, although this may well be due to a lack of rain.
The building is half finished and perhaps too small, with no showers.
The bus they use to take people from the office to the base of the climb to the cave was both unregistered, and had a well expired CoF which is pretty dodgy for a commercial outfit
Wetsuits and gear is old and tatty.

That being said, the good outweighs the bad, and it was a worthwhile excursion.

The Underworld Adventure was fantastic. Adventurous, fun, interesting, well organised. We saw heaps of Glow worms in a really novel way. WE loved the tubing experience and the cave tour was really special.

This was one of our top three things we did in NZ. We have been to several caves.... from the pretty lights of Jenolan caves near Sydney to a beautiful ice cave in Austria. All have been unique and we found the most outstanding feature of this cave tour was the magical experience of floating along the underground stream and being mesmerised by the glow worms above. None of us on the tour wanted it to end!
Due to my heart condition there are a LOT of adventure activities in NZ that I am not allowed to do.....but thankfully this one I could...so I was really appreciative.
Big deal if the wet suits are a bit worn! It's not like we're modelling for the latest Tracks surfing magazine. We Aussies have a saying...."toughen up princess!" (reference to other reviews below). This is a fabulous off-the-beaten track non-touristy experience.
