We just did the train ride, we're not impressed at all. After waiting a long time at the train for the bus to arrive we departed. The speaker system did not work so we got no commentry or history of the area. Arrived at the end and was told could walk to the swing bridge, so walked up there and got back at the time told, only having to wait for the cavers which we saw at the swing bridge, so could have stayed longer there! A very expensive 1.5 hours for us as a family. As really only a 10 minute train journey each way and a lot of waiting.............

Underworld Cave Adventures (http://www.caverafting.com/) are located in Charleston on the South Island's West Coast. Charleston actually does not exist as a town anymore - it is just this business that we could see there. There is no food or amenity. We stayed in Punakaki especially to visit the caves and have this experience with our children. Punakaki is located 30 minutes from Charleston.

We did the "Underworld Rafting" Trip

This is a hard review to write because the natural attraction is amazing. Very interesting inside the caves, learning about the formations, seeing the glowworms while floating down the river, and finally "rafting" down the river in an inner tube. A very special experience. The guides were amazing. Very knowledgeable and very safe. Our safety was their primary concern. We had a 9 year old child with us and the care they took of him was excellent. I cannot fault them except to say that they looked a bit harried and possibly need to remember their "smile faces" for us tourists!

Unfortunately everything else around the experience was very amateur. Remember that this is the only reason we stayed in this area for two nights!

The physical facilities are horrible. Basically an unfinished building site which has been in that state for over 2 years. Even when finished it wont be suitable. They require large changing rooms and showers with lockers (like at a public pool) but it is clear from this building shell that this won't happen. Imagine being in very cold water and a wet wet-suit for over 3 hours to return to a dusty concrete floor and no shower.
The gear was old and most of our party had ripped garments, either boots, wet suit or gloves. ans shamefully all of our life vests were faulty. This is unacceptable. Also we were left to sit in wet wetsuits for 30 minutes on the return train after the trip to return to base as the driver had multiple responsibilities that she needed to attend to!

It's really incumbent on the company to look at the experience as a whole. That's what we believe we are paying for.

The guides took photos along the way (you cannot take a camera) and these were available for download included in the price which was appreciated. The guides are incredibly hard working and the proprietor seemed to be very nice, but they really need to take a long hard look at their professionalism and get some funding and expert advice to improve the situation. This could be amazing...just like the glow worms.

we only did the train ride as we through the other bits might be too onerous for our 4 year old. The train ride was great, wonderful scenery, beautiful forest and river access. we had about 30 minutes to walk around and enjoy the forest. Listening to the briefing for the underground adventure and the glow worm tour i wished we had been going along. The one down aspect was that they were fairly disorganized which was a pity. Being a small family business i think this is just teething problems, but suggest you go with a patient heart... the trip is worth it, Our 4 year old loved it. Booking it through Bookme gave us a great discount.

Although I was very unfit for the long hours of walking over slippery mud, uneven rocks and my legs were too weak walking up the narrow underground pave, but I think I was all worth it to see Eco Tourisim presented so raw yet beautiful. Our guide Doug was encouraging and offered help when I didn't have the strength for the long walk. Great company, they whole heartily cares for their clients!
