Lake Karapiro Lodge
Reviewed January 12, 2013

This was our last stop on our 2 week holiday before heading back to Napier and it was a great way to end our holiday. The Lodge was beautiful and the views were stunning. The room was great and had a lovely outside sitting area overlooking the views and the garden. Ann and Eddie were very friendly and told us some interesting stories. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent and it was nice to sit around a big table in the company of other couples that were also staying. The only tiny minor thing I would say is that the grasses and some of the shrubs could have done with cutting back a bit in front of our outside sitting area as we weren't able to capitalise fully on the wonderful views when sitting outside. However we had a lovely time and would certainly go back again

We stayed in one of the suites for 3 nights while we explored the surrounding area as part of a longer touring holiday. The room (suite) was exceptional with views in both directions. The one from our 'lounge' was particularly stunning looking out over the Waikato River. The bed was large and extremely comfortable and as for the bathroom, words fail me. My only regret is that I didn't sneak the time to take a bath in the large sunken tub.
The hosts, Ann and Eddie, were welcoming and attentive. We only dined in once but had a fantastic steak and local veg followed by strawberries and flavoured cream. Simple but perfectly cooked. Breakfast was always a delight, my husband had a cooked breakfast which looked superb while I had fresh fruit, great coffee and yogurt.
We visited Cambridge, saw real live kiwis at Otorohanga and a preserved rainforest at Maungatautari while staying at the lodge although our hosts made many more helpful suggestions. I'm only sorry we didn't find time to explore Hobiton as well.
I did see the pool but didn't manage to try it out as we had some slightly dodgy weather for two of our days.
Altogether a delightful place to stay which is well off the beaten track of normal touristy places.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked great but the Versace Suite was spectacular.

This was the first stop on our trip from Auckland to Christchurch. We arrived from Dubai at lunchtime and by tea time we were at the Lodge. We were met by Ann and Eddie who had prepared a superb meal and an extremely comfortable room with spectacular views. The breakfast was excellent with our hosts joining us and frankly giving us the best welcome to a wonderful country that one could ask for.
From there it was a twenty minute drive to Hobbitton!

As per the previous reviewer this was a Grabone surprise for my husband's birthdayalso and we really enjoyed our overnight experience. Ann and Eddie were friendly and attentive and the dinner and breakfast were very nice as was the company of another couple. We had a lovely crackling fire and yes the bed was beautifully comfortable. Eddie and Ann's attention to detail when building the lodge must have been exhausting at times. The only thing I could fault, if you could call it that, was the clear plastic tissue box cover and glasses, which weren't in keeping with the rest of the decor, but then if anyone dropped them on the tiles, they wouldn't shatter like glass. It was unfortunate it was raining as I would have loved to have looked all around the gardens.

After our TomTom led us to the wrong address, a phone call directed us directly to the Lodge. So we arrived later than expected, even so were warmly greeted and shown to our room. Probz it was the room reserved for GrabOne voucher customers ;-) still it was well appointed and the bed was THE most comfortable bed. We quickly turned the heat pump on in our room as it was quite fridge-like. Personally I was disappointed our room didn't have an open fire like authentic lodge's would have but understand why the owners opted for the easier heat pump option. And on that note, REALLY disappointed there was no real fire in the formal lounge, especially considering it was winter, cold and wet when we stayed - how lovely (and romantic) would a crackling fire be, being five star and all...
Meeting, mingling and chatting the night away with the other guests who chose the meal option as well, was the highlight of our stay. The meals were delissimo - dinner and breakfast. Thank you to Ann and family for the meals and Eddie for his attention to service.
Our stay was a birthday surprise, we both enjoyed our stay but due to the cost probably won't be staying again.

Room Tip: If you can afford to, pay full price for an upstairs room. The views are more grand and they have s...

We have just spent a night at Karpiro Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The furnishings and decor were top quality as were the ornaments and knicks knacks around, a totally different experience giving us the European flavour. The home cooked meal was beautiful as was the breakfast, I ordered fried bread - yummy. Our hosts were charming and so interesting - we were going to leave by 9 am and it was well after 10 am, having had a guided tour of the house. We had a lakeview room which was lovely but the upstairs suites were out of this world - oh to soak in a Versace bath! I have read the previous reviews and heard the other side of the story - there are always two! I could certainly recommend a stay at Karapiro Lodge.

Room Tip: If you can afford it - take a suite upstairs, but the ground floor rooms are perfectly adequate.

My wife and I decided to travel to Lake Karapiro from Australia to watch our daughter compete for Victoria in the rowing titles. The trip was organised with relatively short notice so I surfed the net to find quality accomodation and a place that my wife and I can enjoy our own company in quiet and pleasant surrounds, as with 6 children such times are seldom experienced. From the very onset we were looked after in fine style. Our daughters race was early and our hosts were happy for us to book in early, the room was spacious, beautifully presented and with magnificent lake views. We organised to dine in and we found the home cook meal and service to be of a very high standard. simply this Lodge exceeded our expectations and we hope our daughter has the opportunity to compete at Lake Karapiro again so we have the opportunity of another stay.

Room Tip: If your going to stay at Lake Karapiro lodge be sure to book a room with a view of the lake. You won...
