the cabbage tree is the perfect stop for good food at a reasonable price when your on the road.

The portions sizes are excellent, prompt delivery of meals, which is appreciated when your on the road, and tasty meals.
The curly fries are so yummy.

I can imagine that if I lived locally I would spend a lot of time here.

This cafe is a regular for us. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious food. The French toast is my favourite (you HAVE to try it). Great for a morning coffee or an afternoon glass of wine.

Nice food, great staff, really friendly and sweet. They were lovely and remembered us and our two yr old from our visit the day before and were so nice. Prompt service and reasonable prices.

We'd booked at Cabbage Tree Cafe for lunch with extended family, and it proved to be an interesting experience with great prices/food/coffee brought down by non-existent service.

* Staff: There aren't any wait staff... We sat for about 45 minutes wondering what was happening (but enjoying catching up). Eventually we were given a couple of bits of paper to write our food and drinks orders on. They could have told us either when booking that they don't have wait staff; and they definitely should have said something after we'd been occupying over half the tables without ordering anything... That said, the counter staff were cheerful.

* Food: There was a nice good variety in both the menu and the cabinets; and it was all well priced. Drinks were well-priced too - although pricing didn't match their website. Despite our larger group, all meals arrived at the same time and all at the required temperature. My meal (creamy mushrooms and bacon) was absolutely delicious, and everyone else pronounced their meals excellent too. As other visitors have noted, the coffee is simply superb - the barista is a huge asset!

* Ambience: The decor of hand-written visitor messages on the plaster-look walls was both different and interesting. The radio was up a bit loud, but on the other hand, we couldn't hear the busy SH1 outside the door.

* Cleanliness: one of the toilets desperately needs a de-cobweb and a jolly good handbasin clean, but overall the venue was clean and tidy.

* Parking: as Tirau was very busy we had to park a couple of streets away. This was a slight issue for a couple of our party with health issues. There is a large gravel carpark next to the cafe, but it belongs to the adjacent premises. Cabbage Tree visitors have reviously been allowed to park in this carpark, but not any more. It's a shame, as the carpark remained empty all afternoon...

* Overall: Cabbage Tree Cafe rates 4 stars for great food and superb coffee at very reasonable prices; and 1 star for service. So for this review, I give them a 3 - but it could so easily be a 4 if they sorted their waiting/communication out.
