“Feels like your on top of the world!”
Reviewed June 3, 2007

We arrived after an adventure thru the hills - the views are wonderful. When we arrived we were treated like family with smiles and such hospitality. Our rooms were exceptional with views from our windows so beautiful that my mom painted straight from the windowsill in her room. The beds were wonderful and the rooms were so spacious.

The food was Outstanding! Fine vegetarian dining - We savored each bite.

We spent our week-long honeymoon enjoying 7 wonderful nights at Montali the during first week of May. Words cannot describe the exquisite cuisine that brought us back to the dining room every evening for a 2-hour unforgettable experience. Alberto was an excellent host, and able to recommend a nicely matched local wine to go with the 4-course meal assembled by his wife Malu and her small but extremely busy team of chefs. My wife and I had never stayed at a resort that offered strictly vegetarian food, and since we are both vegetarians, it really made a difference. No worrying about what was on the menu - just sit back and relax.

The hilltop hotel had commanding views of the surrounding valley and was 30 to 45 minutes to dozens of nearby hill towns, including Assisi and Perugia. The accommodations were simple but thoroughly clean; our suite included a king size bed and an attached bathroom with a rainfall shower head and plenty of hot water.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling in Umbria, and especially to vegetarians who are looking for gourmet vegetarian (or vegan) cuisine at an extremely affordable price!

We have recently returned from an overnight stay at Montali. It of the track a little, but well worth the trip. Wife and I live in Rome and we had an overnight stay without baby. We got there a little after 2pm on Sat (under 2.5hrs from Rome) and the kitchen was closed. Alberto (host) asked us to call by in 1/2hr and he would get kitchen opened. 10 minutes later he appeared on the door step of our room with two plates of fresh pasta, talk about service !

Fantastic outlook over Umbrian valley and extremely relaxing. But the real secret to Montali is the attention to detail of Alberto and his wife and the way they make you feel like you are long lost friends. They are fantastic hosts. The vegetarian food served for dinner was fantastic and precise and picture perfect. They really have a passion for vegetarian food and presentation. Also in under 1hr you can drive and park for a leisurely stroll around the old town centre of Perugia.

Cant wait to try their next menu and use the new "pool/snooker" room just finished by Alberto.

We visited Montali just before Easter as a family of six adults and my 5-year old son, lured by the promise of gourmet vegetarian food. It's a stunning place, and Alberto's warm welcome immediately put us at ease. He instantly got my son on-side by promising him that if he tried all the food, he would show him a magic trick. A 4-course meal starting at 8pm is ambitious for a 5-year old, but he coped amazingly well, and Alberto's magic trick at the end of the first evening's meal did not disappoint - he's been talking about it ever since!

He also quickly made friends with Malu (Alberto's wife and head chef), the family dog, Leo and the cats roaming around outside, and loved running up and down the olive groves.

We explored Umbria during the day and looked forward to the gorgeous evening meals, and delicious breakfasts. Rooms were very comfortable. And we paid no more for half-board at this gourmet haven than we did at mere b&b's in Rome and Florence. Very good value. I'd like to go back a little later in the year next time, when the swimming pool is open. It's a magical place.

Our 4-night stay at the Country House Montali definitely exceeded our expectations.

The setting is absolutely magnificent. Country House Montali is located on a hilltop away from the main road, overlooking the valley below. The property is surrounded by olive trees. It is the perfect setting if you are looking to get away from the major cities and towns. However, the location is still close enough and centrally located to Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto and many other hill towns. Our room and bath were clean and comfortable with a great night sleep.

The main reason for staying at the Country House Montali is for the wonderful dinners that are served each evening. Our host, Alberto, helped us select a fine Italian wine to complement the food as well as explain the dishes that were presented. Every meal was prepared with such care and detail by a fully staffed kitchen. We never experienced this kind of attention to detail. Every dish presented, took on its own personality. The experience was absolutely sublime.

We will definitely return to Country House Montali to relive the experience again.

As mentioned in one of the previous reviews, the cooking is done by Malu and a "varied team of chefs from top culinary schools". I must start by saying that my son is one of those chefs, so I am perhaps biased.

That said, I can only describe my stay as an incredible experience. Alberto is a superb hotelier. The meals were some of the finest I have ever had (and I am not a vegetarian). The service was impeccable. The rooms were spacious and scrupulously clean. My bed was But what I truly appreciated was the tranquility. This is a place where the guests gather to drink wine and watch the sunset, which is well worth watching. After supper, we would gather again and just talk. Should I ever get to heaven, I hope that it will be like the Country House Montali

We just returned from 12 nights at Country House Montali. We, like many of the guests, return each year (this was our third visit). The hotel is wonderful: it is situated on a hilltop in Umbria within easy driving of Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns; has a number of forested walking trails; clean, comfortable rooms; perfect setting for relaxing and unwinding; and of course excellent food!

Montali is family run by Alberto and Malu (the chef), and an interesting and varied team of chefs from top culinary schools. On a previous visit I took an afternoon cooking class with Malu, a great culinary experience. Alberto, Malu, and the staff make everyone feel like family.

Before dinner, guests gather in a outdoor seating area by the main house for a drink and conversation. Dinner is an entertaining event with 4 fixed courses of gourmet food served in an elegant dining room. As each course is served, Alberto, with his charming flair, describes the dish, it's ingredients and origin. Montali is vegetarian but my mother, who is non-vegetarian, said it was her best meal in Italy on a recent trip (and mother knows food). Some of my favorite dishes are the warm chocolate lava cake, fresh gnocchi, the saffron risotto, and potato leek soup. Alberto also has a fine wine list. Breakfast is tea, coffee, cappuccino, hot pastry, bread and jam, and a main plate that changes from day to day and might be a fruit crepe, fruit fritters, or warm Italian cereal. You can also order a light lunch. We had lunch of a mixed salad, home made pasta, and fresh fruit served outdoors at a shaded table under a tree with a gorgeous view of the Umbrian valley below.

The food is comparable to the best vegetarian plates in fine restaurants such as the French Laundry in Napa Valley. Though we are vegetarian, I admit I don't find vegetarian restaurants that interesting but Montali is definitely the exception! Non-vegetarian guests also greatly enjoy the food!

Montali is an "agriturismo" or a country inn. Down to earth, but also refined. The agriculture is olives and the hotel consists of a number of small buildings surrounded by some very interesting ancient olive trees. There are a number of shaded places to sit and read during the day, or you can relax by the pool. Walking around the grounds, among the olive trees is quite enjoyable as well. Rooms are good-sized, well designed, with modern bathrooms.

What is there to do? We alternated morning and afternoon hikes in the adjacent forests and "white roads," catching up on reading in one of the many pleasant seating areas, with visits to nearby hill towns. There is an especially pleasant 60 minute walk down to Fontignano, a town with an Il Perugino fresco, a cafe, and two bakeries (!). Nearby towns to visit include Assisi, Montipulciano, Montefalco, and the local hill town (25 minutes) of Panicale that has two cafes side by side in the main square. If you are interested in a long walk (couple of hours) then there was a Scottish couple who recommended the walk to Panicale.

Tavernelle, the town at the bottom of the hill, has a couple of cafes, a gelateria, two markets, a produce market, laundry, and two bakeries/pasticceria. You can get pizza and focaccia in the mornings from the bakeries!

The hotel rate is a great value as breakfast and a gourmet dinner is included.
