We have been in Villa Monte Solare during a short holiday. The whole experience has been really a "dream". Everithing in this magic hotel in Umbria belongs to a superior level. Our suite was a superior one, very clean, quite with a fantastic bed. The staff is very professional, qualified and ever courteous. Our dinners at restaurant have been amazing, great italian dishes; we found sommelier and maitre very kind and professional. Great place, must came back as soon as possible!

We arrived at Monte Solare after our flight from Atlanta and partook immediately of the spa...it was heaven after a long trip. Our room had a terrace that overlooked the Umbrian hills.
The property has lovely gardens, pool and tennis court. The staff both helpful and courteous. I would recommend the restaurant for dinner. They serve gourmet food and a wode variety of wines. We awoke rather late, but even though breakfast was over, the staff accommodated us by keeping it open and the selection was superb. Can't wait to return.

We have just spent seven nights (I know that's a long time!) in the main villa and were upgraded to a suite having booked a superior room. As described in a recent review, the suites have a sitting room and two bathrooms. The suite had spectacular views of the neighbouring countryside. Although the bar is small, there are two very grand common drawing rooms where you can have a drink on the first floor, a game with magnificent views. As the weather was excellent much of the week, we spent time around the pool area sunbathing and enjoying again new and attractive vistas.
We had dinner once at the Villa, and the food was good, but somewhat expensive. We preferred visiting nice towns such as Citta della Pieve, Panichale and Perugia (all within approximately 20-30 min drive) for their more varied restaurants. The breakfast was good by Italian hotel standards.
Our welcome by the young German lady working at the Villa was wonderful and we found her to be always cheerful and very useful source of local knowledge. Breakfast staff were always courteous and efficient, e.g. Quickly Bringing made to order coffee. It is true that the reception was not always manned but we found nearly all staff to speak good English and to be cheerful and welcoming.
The location of the villa is very convenient for exploring Umbria, as well as Southern Tuscany, and with the motorway connections we were able to visit Siena for the day quite easily. I would agree that the instructions provided by the hotel were somewhat confusing! Having said that, despite updating our GPS, it struggled with identifying many of the local roads, not least the new Tavernelle bypass, which has only been opened in February. Nevertheless, one way or another you get there in the end.
Villa di Monte Solare represents very good value and is an excellent destination hotel, if you wish to explore the neighbouring Umbrian region, as well as Southern Tuscany. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All superior rooms are in an annex to the old villa. Suites and some "traditional"rooms ar...

Villa Monte Solare is a beautiful old villa with views across the countryside to Lake Trasimeno.
The accommodation is spread across several buildings in the grounds as well as the main villa.
We spent 4 nights in the main villa and had a suite on the top floor – a lovely room with two bathrooms and a comfortable sitting room – but please note this is an old building and there is no lift.
There is a restaurant in the villa that serves fine dining food in the evening. It has only got 22 covers so if you are eating in, booking is essential. There is also a small breakfast room with 4 tables.
There is a tiny bar with 4 stools and just one table – and it’s next to the toilets – wholly inadequate if the weather is bad.
If the weather is fine and warm then there is plenty of outdoor seating to eat and drink at.
Two observations – there is no bell or other means of attracting attention at either the bar or the reception both of which may often be unmanned the latter especially around check in time in the early evening.
On several occasions when I went looking for a pre-dinner drink, I had to hunt for someone to serve me only to find all the staff eating their supper. The feeling I got was that I was inconveniencing them, which did not please me.
The reception staff all speak good English but apart from the sommelier, English is not strong in the restaurant although you will get by.
There are no coffee making facilities in the room and this is a disappointment.
One other point, when you book your room, the hotel will send you directions – these are not that easy to follow when you actually get there. Part of the problem is that there are two roads around Tavernelle with the road number SS220 and if you end up on the wrong bit you get really confused.
I would recommend that you take a print of the Google map on the website to pinpoint your turning off the SS220.
Did I enjoy it – Yes because it was a lovely room, the food was delicious and the location was good. Would I stay again – probably not as the customer focus is not great and I would expect better at this level of establishment.

Driving from Rome was easy with a GPS. The weather was great. We will be back!!!

Room Tip: ask to stay at the main building.

We stayed at Villa Monte Solare 15 years ago, as part of a trip celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. This year was our 40th anniversary and we decided to go back for three nights. We wish we could have stayed longer. It was wonderful - despite an incredible thunderstorm one night taking out the electricity supply and hence the water pump, leaving the hotel without water for several hours.

Unsurprisingly the place has changed over 15 years. Gone is the slightly quirky hotel with wine-tasting evenings and concerts in the chapel, and painted furniture in the bedrooms, and in its place is a slickly-run, friendly, and beautifully decorated hotel, with lots of new accommodation in villas and converted buildings on the estate.

We were in Room 10 in the main house. It has an entrance lobby with antique furniture, a window and two armchairs. Then there's the bedroom itself - it's big, with room for a table and two more armchairs, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bookshelves, and a large and very comfortable bed. There are great views from the two windows (it's a corner room). Bathroom was small but well-equipped.

Meals were good and so was the wine, with friendly and attentive service.

It's a shame there aren't any communal areas other than the dining room, as it would have been nice to chat to people. There are a couple of lounges upstairs, but we never saw them being used.

The directions for finding the hotel are pretty rubbish - they don't seem to gave taken into account a new road. They warn you against using SatNav in case it takes you up unmade tracks - but ours (TomTom) took us straight there.

All in all a great place.

We stayed six nights in this hotel and were totally impressed by the beauty of the property and the amazing views. The grounds are immaculate and really beautifully laid out. We stayed just below the main building in Room 41. The bedroom and bathroom were both incredibly spacious, beautifully decorated and very, very clean. There was ample room for clothes to be hung or placed in drawers. We had a table and comfy chairs in one corner and another table and chairs outside on our private terrace. Our room overlooked the vineyards and we enjoyed a magnificent sunrise every morning.
Our only complaint about the room is that the walls are very, very thin. We could hear conversation, the television and even the folks next door walking to the bathroom during the night. Luckily, we had a wonderful, very friendly couple from England next door and they were not noisy folks, by nature. Had they been a more lively, rambunctious couple, it really could have affected our night's sleep.
I would like make special note about how helpful and friendly the reception staff was. They were always ready to assist with directions, pleasant towns to visit and special requests.
Breakfast was served each day starting at 7:30; but, eggs were not often available until 8am or even later. There were plenty of options for breakfast, including croissants, cereal, fruit salad, yogurt, fresh juice, cold cuts and cheese. We just wish the eggs were ready at the start of breakfast since we are early risers and often left for a day of adventure quite early.
We only dined in the restaurant twice. The atmosphere was a bit quiet and formal for us. And, although they seem to be trying for a certain level of elegance, it comes off a bit snobby and uncomfortable. And, sadly the food did not live up to its expectations. We were less than enthused about everything we ate there. Oddly, the restaurant played a very strange mix of American music that seemed out of place here. It would have been more appropriate to play some light classical music. That would have fit more with the mood they seem to be trying to create.
We did enjoy sitting by the pool several days and it was beautiful and very clean.
All in all, we would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to tour the towns in and around Umbria and Tuscany. It is an hour or less away from great towns like Cortona, Orvieto, Assisi, Montelcino, Pienza, and more. And, when you are not sightseeing, it is a very relaxing place to be.
