Villa di Monte Solare

We spent part of our honeymoon in Tuscany at this villa, and could not have been happier with the area, the service, and the room. We had a beautiful room with two gorgeous views. The grounds are beautiful, and the pool also was situated on a hill with a great view. It was very quiet and restful to relax in the sun while admiring the wonderful Tuscan hills.

We had breakfast there every morning, which was great--they had a variety of meats, eggs, cheese, pastries, and the coffee was delightful. We also had two dinners at the villa, and both were outstanding. Each course was exceptional and extremely well-prepared.

Perhaps the BEST meal that we had was our Cooking Class with Chef Sergio on our last day in Tuscany. This is a class that was provided by the Villa, and my husband and I were the only people in the class. The food was AMAZING. Chef Sergio was a great teacher and really demonstrated cooking technique rather than just going through the recipes provided. At the end, after a well-planned cooking class, we were able to enjoy out prepared gnocchi with pesto, homemade pasta with marinara, stuffed turkey with a delightful vegetable puree sauce, and a wonderful onion parmigiana dish--all in all, it was a meal that we would never have had in a restaurant as each pasta was prepared on the spot with a separate sauce for each dish. We loved the cooking class and would recommend it to anyone who has an appreciation for good food (especially homemade pasta).

We loved our stay at the Villa and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main villa and were happy there. The room was very quiet and clean.

This hotel can be difficult to find without a GPS in your car; but its well worth the effort. First of all, it's located atop a hillside with beautiful views, on both sides, across the lush valleys.

The welcome is warm at reception and though the staff is limited, they go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. Some of the rooms are situated in the main building while others are in two outbuildings. The rooms are well appointed with good beds and bedding and most of the little extras one expects in a hotel of this caliber.

The restaurant is not inexpensive but is good -- not outstanding however. Breakfasts offer a wide variety of hot and cold items so there are no complaints.

We really like this hotel but it is not ideal for touring Umbria in general because the access is slow and windy so it takes you nearly an hour to reach Perugia and more to reach some of Umbria's other highlights. However there are some great places within 30 minutes or so that are delightful including the tiny walled townof Panicale and the larger old walled Citta della Pieve. Lake Trasimeno is also in the general neighborhood.

Monte di Solare is one of our favorite places to relax and enjoy the serene beauty of the Umbrian hills. This was our second visit and, hopefully, not our last.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the Limonaia

We spent a week in this charming hotel set on an Umbrian hillside looking across to Lake Chiusi. We had chosen it because of the opportunities it gave my husband for doing long walks in the Italian countryside.

It is a relatively small hotel but with a wide choice of bedrooms and suites. There are rooms and suites in the 18thC villa itself, but there are also clusters of rooms in a variety of beautifully restored buildings nestled into the hillside. There are two swimming pools, one of which is near the villa and tennis court, and a second, probably more recently constructed pool situated conveniently for the cottages, with full facilities, showers, toilet facilities, etc., all immaculately maintained. Near this cluster of cottages is also the hotel's small trattoria which serves breakfasts and simple evening meals. The main restaurant, in the villa, is closed on Tuesday evenings - something to be aware of - and one can dine at the trattoria instead. The trattoria is closed on Thursdays.

The meals at the main villa, both breakfasts and dinners, were very good. Although the a la carte itself did not change on a daily basis, each evening there were two extra choices. Lunches at the villa offered simple but generous meals and the service was always very efficient and friendly, whether inside the dining room with its beautiful mural of the Umbrian countryside, or outside under the trees in the garden. The sommelier was especially friendly and helpful, with her extensive knowledge of, in particular, the local wines.

Our generous sized bedroom was one of four located in the Limonaia, a small building with large windows (originally used for over-wintering lemon trees), modernised, with a good en suite containing both bath and shower. Each patio, separated from the others in this block with hedges and lemon trees in pots, faced across the valley to the south east, and we were able to use it for stting in the sun for the whole of the morning if we chose not to go down to the pool.

There is a spa, but we did not make use of it.

While we were at this hotel we made trips to Perugia and to several of the local villages round Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy. But we were also here for the walking and my husband did three walks, of different lengths, through the local vineyards, olive groves, and orchards, through small villages and past farms and small holdings. His longest walk was of About 10 miles, but the walking was relatively easy because of the broad tracks/unmetalled roads. Maps for all his walks were supplied by the hotel, along with supplementary descriptions. He was most appreciative of the hotel's help and advice about his walks.

Set amongst the vineyards, on a hillside, away from the main roads and bustle of towns, this hotel is a perfect place to escape the pressures of a busy life. The staff were unfailingly helpful, friendly and attentive, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: The range and location of rooms is so extensive that there is probably something for everyone, whate...

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Villa di Monte Solare. The property is stunning, the staff warm and accommodating, and the rooms are just beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed both afternoons lounging at the pool which we had to ourselves. We did not want to travel at night so we ate at their restaurant. The food and service were superb.
Not sure when we'll return to Umbria but when we do-- we'll look forward to a return visit.

The property and surroundings meet the expectations of those seeking for an Italian countryside experience in a classical and quiet environment. Staff are extremely professional while friendly and open - ready to go the extra mile for a customer at any time. The restaurant has improved remarkably and is now by itself a reason to spend a night there. The two swimming pools are a great asset since those with children can stay at one while couples looking to absolute peace (with a breathtaking view of Umbrian hills) can stay at the other. We are looking forward to come back again soon.

We have now stayed here 9 times and we will go back. This is a quiet hotel in the countryside but in striking distance of some of the best hill towns and renaissance architecture and art in N Italy. This year the service was as excellent as always and if anything the food has slightly improved in terms of choice. If you are looking for a fabulous location, great food and unrivalled service this hotel is for you. The hotel has changed hands but so far nothing has been lost, in fact even the staff are mostly the same, we hope that lasts. This hotel is a winning formula.

Room Tip: We have stayed in most of the hotel locations but like Limonaia rooms best - since you also get an o...

Our stay was really excellent. The hotel is really beautiful. We had a very variated breakfast for Italian standards. The swimming pool has a stunning view. And oh so quiet!
Thel restaurant in the hotel was closed. We were recommanded a small restaurant in the neigherhood for lunch and the hotel has a second restaurant just 200m from the hotel for dinner. Both were just perfect.
