“Difficult to know what to say”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

So many aspects of this hotel are very good, the location is beautiful, the pools are great and the staff are all friendly and incredibly helpful. Breakfast was wonderful with a superb choice of options. All that said, we felt that the atmosphere was a little conservative and, perhaps, overly serious. We didn't eat in the Dolium restaurant having been put off by the dress code and the feeling that children weren't welcome. But we did eat in the Trattoria, which was nice even if the portion sizes were on the small side. Our room was very large and well appointed, though we could have done without the noisey romantic couple upstairs "enjoying" themselves!

Every summer we travel in Umbria and Tuscany - we have done so for the past 10 years - Villa di Monte Solari is the only hotel we return to every year and the only place we stay for a full week. It's a fabulous location to chill with lovely grounds and a delightful garden. The staff are friendly but not intrusive, the food and wine are both very local and excellent. The location is great for exploring Umbrian renaissance art and architecture, hill towns and Etruscan Italy.

Room Tip: We prefer the "Limonia" rooms - where you also get some outside space but we have also sta...

This stunning little hotel has it all. An idyllic location, superb food and drink, friendly staff and a range of interesting activities.

We stayed for 4 nights in July, to celebrate my wife's special birthday. The hotel is situated in the Umbrian Hills, in extensive grounds surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. On arrival from Perugia airport we were immediately made to feel very welcome and at home by the receptionist.
Our room was in the main Villa building and was large and luxurious. Facilities/furnishings included bath robes, a sofa and a jacuzzi. The hotel had also provided flowers and champagne on my arrival, as I had requested by e-mail. Due to it's secluded location, we slept very well. The approach road to the hotel does narrow and you should drive carefully after dark.

I had booked cooking lessons for my wife and I and a day at the hotel Spa. The cooking lessons were conducted on 2 days in the hotel's Trattoria and lasted about 5 hours each including the time to eat the meal. These were great fun and informative. The Spa day consisted of exclusive use of the Spa i.e. tepedarium, steam room, sauna, shower (an experience) for an hour then an hour long massage of your choice. This was very relaxing and the fact that you and your partner had exclusive use makes it feel very special.

The hotel has 2 restaurants. The Dolium is a gourmet restaurant and we ate a delightful 4 course regional menu complete with different wine for each course on our first night. There is also a Trattoria serving a more limited menu which is tasty and reasonably priced. The hotel has an extensive wine list, prices start at £9 for a bottle of local Tressimino, which is very drinkable.
Breakfast is served outside (weather permitting) where you can enjoy the views and sunshine.

We saw the owners of the hotel (Filippo and Rosi) during dinner and at the reception and they also introduced us to the Chef at our cooking lessons. They are obviously very proud of their hotel and their friendliness is echoed in all of the staff that we met. Once a week the hotel hosts an hour long classical music concert in the chapel in the hotel grounds. Filippo had arranged 4 classical guitarists to perform and this was a unique way to spend an hour in the evening.

In conclusion, this hotel is perfect for a relaxing break "away from it all", and also offers many interesting activities for those looking for something different. It's location is good, as we easily drove to Umbrian towns such as Assisi and Orvieto in an hour. The hotel is less than an hours drive from Perugia airport.
We had a wonderful time and will definitely return.

Room Tip: We had a top floor room in the main villa which was very quiet. Ground floor rooms in the other bui...

This is a very difficult hotel to review. Based on my experience , staying around 180 nights in hotels around the world for business, I find that some of the basics are not right : wifi unpredictable, bathroom to basic and it took ages to get the right temperature, cheap Chinese TV, no room service on the day that restaurant is closed...some basics that should be right for an hotel in this price range. ...so disappointed.
the location, the calmness , the food and the friendly staff are in line with the price.
So it is a decision on where your priorities are but overpriced, Jean Vanhoegaerden

This hotel epitomizes all that is best about Italy: a beautiful setting in the rolling countryside of Umbria, with olive groves spreading down the hillsides in one direction and vineyards in the other; timeless buildings, in sympathy with their surroundings; good food; helpful staff. Most of all, we appreciated the short tour of the property that was conducted by the owner himself: he is proud of his property and his country, and with good reason! We felt privileged to stay here, and hope to return soon.

Stayed here for 4 nights of pure relaxation. Had a spa treatment and did the cooking class and both were supreme. I can still taste some of the things we made that day. Food is very important to us and my only suggestion would be to change the menu more frequently. We stayed 4 nights and were there for the night meal every night and by the end of our stay we were looking for some new choices. If you stay that long, maybe go into town for a few meals.

We have lost count of the number of times we have stayed at Monte Solare, but think it is about 8. It is always delightful, but each time we notice something that has changed - for the better. This time it was the inclusion of hot items in the breakfast, and the addition of a "bistro" facility for those who don't wish to eat in the main restaurant, but don't want to go anywhere else either.

There is little to add to the existing reviews which show that, out of 332 (and that is remarkable for a small establishment) 290 have scored it as "excellent" and all the rest as "very good" - I have yet to see a negative report. We believe it is quite unique, but to understand this you have to go there. Do it!

Message to Filippo and Rosi - see you again for my birthday next year.
