After checking various websites for the Chateau de Sassy visiting times (advertised as open until 12.30am on Sunday, the day of our visit), we drove 50 minutes to visit the interior of the château itself (for the first time) and the gardens (which we had seen before, but at a time when the chateau interior was shut).
We arrived at 10.55, and on approaching the doors to the chateau we saw a notice in French on door that said there was a tour in progress but the next tour would be at 11.30. So we happily went for a walk around the grounds to fill in time. 11.25 we returned, and now the door had a sign saying "Ouvert" and there was no-one else in sight but a girl behind the reception desk inside the chateau.
We went in, all smiles, proferring cash to pay for the scheduled vist at 11.30. But we were brusquely refused entry because "We are expecting a group, so there are no more visits until 2.30pm - you can go away and return later" (in French). Great - best part of 2 hours "aller-retour" wasted.
In my opinion the customer service at this place stinks - why give out wrong information in the first place, then compound it by refusing admission. We would even have been happy to tag along with the "group" and not ask any questions or disturb their visit, but that was not an option when I suggested it.
So we visited Bagnoles de l'Orne, a garden called Jardin Retiré, bought stuff at Boutique Jardin and on way home visited Garden of Mansonière instead.
Beware - Chateau de Sassy place may be okay if you do get inside, but the customer service is pants.
