Reviewed October 22, 2011

In September we booked two nights at Château du Bois Noir. We thought it would be a nice stopover on our way north from the Dordogne, but we were not expecting such an elegant château experience. After missing the road to the château (our own fault) and making a quick phone call to get directions, we drove up the hill until we reached their gate. We had arrived, and we were immediately greeted cheerfully and enthusiastically by Henriette van Ampting. She is a naturally happy person, and her love for life spreads to everyone around her. She showed us to our room, which (including the en suite bathroom) had windows on three sides – so we had marvelous light and views of both the gardens and the countryside. We soon met Henk van Ampting, who over the next two days proved to be the perfect host - an interesting man who took time to answer our questions and explain so much to us about his château. We were, of course, impressed by how immaculate Château du Bois Noir was and how well-manicured the gardens were, but the highlight of our stay was dining each evening at La Petite Châtelaine, the château's restaurant dining room. Henk gave us our choice of apéritifs each evening in the salon or out on the balcony followed by two exquisite meals prepared for us by Henriette, an expert and creative chef. We couldn't help notice the refinement with which he served the meals and poured the wine, and were pleased when Henriette appeared at the cheese course to describe each one in detail. In addition to the meals being delicious, her avocado soup and a sauce she served one night with salmon were both unforgettable. Château du Bois Noir is not only beautiful, comfortable and well located in gorgeous surroundings, but it offers a sophisticated charm without being stuffy, and the van Amptings are the most gracious and delightful couple. We hated leaving and hope to return again soon.

Room Tip: Chambre Louise-Elisabeth was lovely. Bathroom had a great shower!
