The desert lies about 30 mins drive from Almeria town centre. It’s relatively easy to get to once you get on the main road. The road drives directly though the desert and the views are fantastic. We visited 'Western Leone' - the film set used for a host of Spaghetti Westerns and was where ‘Upon a Time in the West’ was filmed. This is the smaller of the Western film sets, with Mini Hollywood and Fort Bravo being the most popular. No excursions go here so its only accessible by car. All three sets are about 5 minutes drive apart. Western Leone was charming. It’s much quieter than the others and because of this retains some real character. The cowboys who walk around the set put on a small show which I thought was very entertaining and probably funnier than intended! I found the trip so enjoyable and insightful. Western Leone was a real pilgrimage for my partner who is a huge fan of Leone and he didn't stop smiling the entire time we were there! Well worth a visit and highly recommended.
