Driving from Greymouth to Hokitika we turned left at the Junction, a quick drive to Kumara. We had a Delicious coffee at The Theatre Royal Hotel before taking the scenic route through Goldsborough Historic/ camping reserve back to Hokitika. It was a warm and cosy stop on a rainy day.

A wonderfully nice restored house contains 4 bedrooms with en-suite and shared living room + little kitchen. Great place to relax after a long drive and meet fellow travellers and have a chat and a glass of wine.
After that, a lovely dinner in the hotel (just across the road), in a nice typically english style decorated dinner room.
Staff was very very friendly, although the place was very busy at the time. They took their time for us.
(After dining, go have a look at the glow-worms behind the hotel parking lot. Do take a torch...)

Eight of us dined here on Saturday 29th March. We all had the most fantastic meals. The lamb was truly amazing as was the Venison. It really is the finest city dining on the remote West Coast of NZ. The prices are very un-city!!! This hotel is truly a credit to the owners who have done a wonderful refurbishment. We found the staff delightful, friendly and fun. This little town is on the up, please stop and eat, stay or whatever. The effort alone of this one establishment is truly amazing. Please, please just leave a little space for the lemon dessert, it will honestly be a taste sensation you will be thinking about for a very long time. Well done Theatre Royal Hotel, take a very large bow! We will be back!

Kumara on New Zealand's South Island West Coast is being rejuvenated by the extended Christchurch Fitzgibbon family. They started with rebuilding the 1876 Theatre Royal Hotel that was at the heart of New Zealand's last great gold rush, attracting theatre performers worldwide.. The Fitzgibbons were inspired by the opening of the 136 km Wilderness cycle trail linking Greymouth and Ross. The hotel provides Upmarket accommodation and dining for travellers. Comfortable rooms are well appointed with attractive decor and fittings. Bar and cuisine quality is what one might expect in a top class city establishment. Not surprisingly Theatre Royal was declared the 2013 New Zealand' best restored hotel with accommodation.

Just had dinner at this fine establishment - exquisite fine dining food in a relaxed casual atmosphere. All the staff were ultra friendly and professional, what a gem! Family friendly with a fantastic wee play ground for the kids which is so rare to find. Kumara, you are proving to be so much more than a drive through town :)

We stayed and dined here and loved every bit of it..
The staff showed us what coast hospitality is all about and we couldn't find any fault..
The rooms are of high standard and the food to us was also high standard.
We fine dine out often so this to us topped off the experience for us..
Highly recommended even if its just to stop in to eat..
