This is a great place to stay if visiting the National Park, a two-hour bus ride from Rio. The hotel is nice, the staff are lovely and the food great. Bring warm clothes if you come in winter, as the hotel's location means it can be cold; and enjoy the walks, breakfasts watching birds and monkeys, the waterfalls, and the peaceful atmosphere.

This place is fantastic particularly, if you love birds. You can see many species at the feeders and on the grounds, even some that are difficult to see elsewhere. The fireplaces in each chalet are wonderfully cozy and in winter you will be glad for them. The showers have very hot water - also nice in winter. The food is excellent, so you might gain a pound! The setting is beautiful with views into the valley and ever changing clouds. Saturdays many people come for the churrasco grill during the afternoon. But you can always go on a hike in the surroundings. Once a day there also is a guided walk. But do not expect a birding guide there!

We had just an awesome time here. We spent three nights here, and as others have said, the food is great, the staff are very helpful and accommodating, the nature is wonderful. The all inclusive price of about $180 per day is quite reasonable for what you get. We loved it. The reason I'm giving it four stars is because of the extreme difficulty in communicating with them. We traveled independently, so I tried to set up the reservation myself. Four phone calls, four emails, my Brazilian friend even called to try to set up arrangements. Even though this is a resort with many foreign tourists, only one person on staff speaks any English whatsoever. However, when we arrived, they had no idea we were coming! So, be forewarned on this if you are setting up your own reservation. Apparently it's best if you try to communicate with Daniela, the manager, who is in from 11AM-3PM weekdays (?) only.

Still, go by all means, if you possibly can. This place is terrific.

I was at Hotel Ype in late July 2012 with a birdwatching tour. The moment we arrived, I loved it. The chalets are enchanting, the scenery gorgeous, the food outstanding. The staff was gracious and friendly. Ype is in the Itatiaia National Park, providing a full immersion in nature. The whole place is just beautiful and the weather was perfect.
I'd return in a heartbeat.

I'm a hiker, wife's a committed birder. Both of us were enchanted!
Wonderful and well-maintained trails through a pristine forest with amazing bird life and a surprise: monkeys not much smaller than chimpanzees. Absolutely amazing encounters w/our fellow primates who were wary, though not exactly shy.
The chalets were wonderful and we very much enjoyed the fires every night (w/provided wood) in the bedroom fireplace. The food? Very, very good home-style Brazilian cooking (buffet) w/ridiculous dessert choices (one night had 8 (yes, eight) chocolate selections--- and they were all good!
After a day of hiking, what better than to relax w/a swim in the heated indoor pool (outdoor's water prohibitively was cool) and then a sauna (2 kinds available, wet and dry).
The staff were VERY helpful.
All-in-all, a place well befitting Brazil's first national park.

Best Humming Bird place I have ever stayed at - they sit on your hand and even your camera!
Staff are friendly and always happy to be of service.
Rooms are clean with own balcony looking out into the rainforest.
Pool freezing cold!
Check out the georgeous moths in the evening

Room Tip: Rooms near the reception have less steps to climb!

We spent 3 nights in October on a birding tour. We were not disappointed. Outstanding bird life in the National Park. Although the staff spoke very little english they were attentive and very helpful. We had the Ype suite, right off the dining room with four rooms with wonderful views of the valley and mountains and a working fireplace. The others in our group were in A frame chalets below the dining room with fireplaces as well and large balconies. The rooms were clean. Food was very good with large selections at all meals especially lots of desserts. Beer was inexpensive, very good and always cold.
The hotel is at the top of a very steep hill so any walks you take are downhill until you want to return which can be very strenuous. Once you get down the steep part there is a road to the right that goes to a river and a waterfall that is quite flat.
If you are a birder the hotel grounds are outstanding with at least 70 species seen within 100 yards. The hummingbird feeders are very active and the birds are not at all skittish.
The hotel is up high so bring extra layers since it can be cool and misty during the day and very cool at night without heaters except the fireplace.
We would go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Get a chalet below the dining room.
