Club Amigo Mayanabo
Reviewed November 10, 2012

I stayed at the Club Amigo Mayanabo from October 19 to November 02, 2012.
In general for the price I paid it was OK, but not great.
The room cleaning lady, Tammy, did a very good job at making sure the room was always very clean.
The food was OK, Roberto one of the cooks on duty working the grill did outstanding spaghetti with mushroom and sauce. The food was constantly recycled, but the fish was always fresh.
The one thing that is missing in the food was a small amount of spices, other than it was OK.
My favorite dish was desert, their Icecream cake was very good.
In the morning at breakfast Pancakes was a surprise, but at times the cerals were stale and old.
Also for breakfast they had a coldcut meat section and at times flies would be around this section, this must be corrected.
At the bar all the drinks you wanted were available, just tip the bartender $1.00 peso.
But there is nothing around this Hotel, only the disco club Rumba.
In the mens public toilets 1 stall out of 3 had toilet paper.
I would rate this Hotel a 2.5 star on 5.

Very Old Hotel, needs a lot of tender loving care. Great Beach though. Three buildings 2 story hotel. On the beach with a nice white sandy beach. If you are a diver right near the reef. Only 1 ale carte restuarant.

Room Tip: 1 hour massage was 20 CUC a very good deal for a massage

Club amigo mayanabo may not look like much on the outside. The atmosphere on the other hand is fantastic. The staff upon arrival make you feel right at home. They are very helpful and kind. anything you may need they will bend over backwards for you.
The entertainment staff is always fun and will make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Hello to all trip advisor friends!

Ok where do I start. since this trip was unusual in soo many ways!!! I'm just back from a 1 week, travelling solo for the 1st time, stay from October 19th to the 26th at the Mayanabo. So I got to live through Huricane Sandy and mostly bad weather all week. Nevertheless this was one of my best trips ever!!! Why?The people and their heart warming atitude! All you encouter; Many are repeat guest and want newbies to like the hotel they love and the proud staff that work their behinds off to make your stay as pleasent as possible.it was good mix of famillies, couples and single men and women. I always say a trip is what you make it but everyone around me made it real easy to have a superb time and fall in love with the place.

if you are reading reviews? Most already adressed food, rooms, pool, beach and the site in general. most are on the mark and I won't add too much except to say it's a 3 star that is very clean, under improvement since the whole block 2 will be completely renovated by end of November, it's basic but great basic!!!. I was expecting much less than what I got and, let's be honest, at an unbeatable price. My fist feeling was: "Hey this place is better than on the pictures I saw..".
The hotel layout is simple but that's what's great about it. Everything is centrally located and you keep on bumping into easily made friends. You've probably seem comments about "companionship": The repeat guest said that the place was being cleaned up and I didn't see anything so flagrent that really warants mentioning it. There is a live and let live vibe at the hotel. The issues from before are now an off site thing. But It's Cuba and there are going to be few "love stories"! but I've seen those in most hotels I've been too in Cuba! LOL!

The week I was there the Mayanabo was the place to be. It was party central! The Brisas seemed to have good parties too but with a younger and mucj loader crowd ! Some friends I'd made from other hotels came over for a few evenings and they loved the atmospere at the Mayanabo!! The great job the hotel band, dancers and animation team does accounts for alot!!!

I travelled with Nolitour and they started a new concept called Nolizone. Basically they do thematic parties to highten the party mood. All are invited! Not just Nolitour guests. The only thing they want is for all to have fun! Great atitude!!! One night was the all white party and boy was that a blast! It's the first one they ad but they really it the mark!!! If you go pack an all white kit of clothes! Staff and guess alike ad a great time! All comments were positive, Staff were super happy since everyone got into it! The night shows are great but Nolizone structured it a bit more and I personnally think it's a great idea on their part. Some parties in the future will regroup all the hotels. A big one like that is planned for Nov.2nd. Nolitour as an on site rep decicated to Nolizone for the 4 hotels. It's obvious they want this to work! Simple while I was there they simply hit the mark.
I was there to relax and go fishing and snorkle. Only had one fishing trip because of the weather, fortunately the fishing was awesome. Would recommend the deep sea fishing. Snorkeling was bad because of cherned up seas. Basically all the plans I had made were out the door and decided to go with the general party mood vibe and had a great time! That's the Mayanabo I experienced

Even if this hotel is rated 3 stars and could be seen has the least desirable. I beg to differ! They seem to have the upper hand on other hotels in regards to official ceremonies and competition
Most are held at the Mayanabo. For example while we were there they had the official Best hotel chef competition for Camaguey province. The 3 winners going on to the nationals. 25-30 chefs, all superbly dressed, competing for the title. Wow, that day, the food we had was 6 stars! LOL!

The staf is proud of their hotel and you REALLY feel it! Other ceremonies are scheduled during the year. The hotel is older yes but I was pround all week to say I was staying there. Mayanabo is a small hotel that really did it for me. I'll be going back!

Now, I'd like to adress a few comments about they day/night of the Hurricane. The rain started around 6:00 pm that evening and ny 6:00 am it was over But the 6-7 hours prior was hyper calm. No wind nor rain with humidity that could be cut with a butter knife. Guest were a bit nervous by mid-afternoon, Local TV was showing only two towns on the weather map; the entry point and the exit point of the Hurricane (Playa Santa Lucia). they told us everything was Ok and not to worry! At 7:00 pm they started telling everyone to pack their bags all were being relocated to the Brisas (the safest hotel in the area).I was informed around 7:30 ans was told to be in lobby by 8:00 pm.We went from an all is OK feeling to this is no joke mood! From that point on sh.t hit the fan and it wasn't pleasent. After quickly being packed on a bus, I was given a room under renovations. Many guests got to see the rooms they never use worse than mine and still they were short many rooms. But in the end we all helped each other, some gave up their perfect rooms to familly with kids and others bunked together but everyone slept safe.
I had to go back to get a key because the man that showed me my room was sure i'd refuse to sleep there and left quickly keeping my key. I prefered a dry place over no room at all, so I needed a new key...There was almost a mob at front desk and while I was there I saw a few horror stories, errors were made but my hats off to the front desk staff. They always stayed polite and did the best they could. the situation was a bit out of control but what they could control was themselves and they did a great job at that! I took the time to tell them the next morning. a Thank You goes a long way! I learned that all the hotel staff hadn't slept for at least 24 hours and all were still trying to smile! Wow!
I'm sure, other guests that were there while the Huricane hit us will complain. all they wanted was to keep us safe. We got lucky and didn't get hit that bad. If we would of had the brunt of the Hurricane like what Santiago or Holguin guest and locals had to endure we would of said thank you!

ps. sorry I won't have photos, my camera was a victim of hurricane Sandy. I guess it didn't happilly to being lugged around in 6 inches of water.

Room Tip: block 2 = completely renovated rooms (will be finished in late nov.2012) .1st floor rooms might have...

This is it...i mean what do you want from vacation? Time of your life? I had one in Mayanabo. Well, to be honest it was because of the people i've spent time with but never the less, Mayanabo played absolutely positive part in this vacation and i will rate it accordingly.
The arrival was great. Nice, quick and easy. No hassle. The staff is helpfull. The area is very easy to navigate in and pretty straight forward.
The rooms was okay. Not excellent, but okay. But again, what do u need in the room. It had a perfect, working A/C unit, television set, shower, fan, mini fridge. The safe in the room comes separately, it is 2 dollars per day fee and 15 dollars deposit for the safe key which you will get back at the end of ur stay.
Maids are excellent, room wasn't cleaned for the first night, but it was totaly my decision, you have to put the sign on the door either you want your room to be cleaned or not. I find it to be amazing service. All the other hotels u have no choice, the room will be cleaned unless u negotiate that in the reception. Here, it's ur choice, by putting out the sign.
The area is not big, but then again it had everything. Nice, clean pool with volleyball net spread across. Bar, coffee bar, restaraunt, entertainment stage, mini market, the store, gym ( and a very good one ), massage service ( 1 hour - 20 CUC ).
Here comes the fun part, the place is 50 meters away from two great night clubs in the neighbourhood. It is also 150 meters away from Rapido for all you grocery/soft drink/alcohol/tobaco needs and it open 24 hours.
Don't bother with the tours. U have ur basic options: snorkleing, crocodile farm, catamaran and so on, but seriously, this is the area to be out and about with locals and just enjoy it. This is the best part of it.
Scooter rental available at the reception for 25 dollars a day or it gets cheaper if u take the scooter for longer time - 100 CUC for a week. I advise you to do it, having ur transportation is great. Gas station is five minutes away. The price of the gas is .90 cheap and 1 CUC per litre for regular. U can go super for 1.40 CUC per litre but no need to.
Postal office is right beside the gas station. If u need to send out the post card or the letter to Europe, the stamp will cost you .90 CUC. To North America the price is .75 CUC.
Right beside the postal office is the Cubacell office. You can get a local SIM card for 3 CUC per day. That way the price of the text messages goes to $1 and price to call Canada for a minute is $1.50.
There are three hotels near by: Gran, Club amigo Caracol and Brisas. Also you get numerous of bars in centro commercial around.
The town near by is a good option to walk around.
Spend a day at the Coco beach, the taxi there is about 5-7 CUC each way, but it's worth it. Usually people stay by the restaraunt called Buchanero's. They have a nice beach, loan chairs can be rented tor 1 CUC per day and prices are cheap for the lunch and dinner.

It really depends on the people you surrounded which will be determining factor of whether ur vacation was good or not. I came there with some friends, but i left the place with even more friends. So for sure, you want to have a great vacation, stay at Club Amigo Mayanabo

Was at the Mayanabo for two weeks in May 2012. This was the third time to Santa Lucia in 10 months. I stayed at the Carocol in March 2011 and the Gran Club in Nov 2011. I had a good time at Mayanabo and rate their food a little above that of the other two resorts. The grounds and pool are kept clean. Service from all staff members was good. Rooms were kept clean and were comfortable with hot water and good AC. One wing of the hotel is close to the offsite outdoor disco/club so it can get really loud until very late. The beach is not nearly as nice as most beaches in Cuba but is passable. Drinks were good and there was never a lineup at either bar. Santa Lucia is not a good place to bring kids (or a spouse for that matter) but with a little research most would know that before booking. Santa Lucia is a great place to mingle with real Cubans --- I loved hanging out at El Rapidio and buying a few beers for the locals. Yes there is prostitution at these resorts just like there is prostitution everywhere in the world. It is not really "in your face" as some reviewers complain obout and will not wreck your vacation unless you dwell on it and look for it. The girls that partake in this activity are not being taken advantage of as they make what they normaly would in a month in one hour. If the deal is mutually satisfactory to both parties I would suggest that others mind their own business. It is not just the women who are prostituting themselves. Cuban people are great to be around and this is why I enjoy this area of Cuba. Tipping is not necessary but is always appreciated. I suggest CUC's instead of dollarstore trinkets. Go with an open mind and you will enjoy this unique area of Cuba. I paid about $750/all in/no single supplement for two weeks. I got more than my monies worth and will return shortly to sample Brisas -- the 4th and last hotel for me to try in Santa Lucia. Mayanabo is a good little resort for the money.
