It is not a real museum. It is bigger farm with some rooms for visitors. Best thing there is a large model of the lake (how the water fills the ground). They can show you some old tools and a wooden boat. Entrance fee is quite high, higher than in some big museums in Slovenia.

This family run and operated family business has two excellent exhibits that illustrate the dynamic nature of the karst landscape. Firstly there is an excellent model that took the operators three years to build. This shows how Lake Cerknica comes and goes each season with the coming and going of water that floods the 'lake' (a karst polje) in the autumn and them flows away in the spring leaving farming areas that are turned to crops each spring and summer. You can read about karst and water in textbooks, but in this model you see the springs seep water and watch the waters rise to form the 'lake' and then watch the waters drain away.

The model is followed up by a really good audio-visual display which shows the seasons of the lake and the people living there, fishing, growing and harvesting crops, winter sports when the lake is frozen, sailing and swimming when it is thawed. And then the lake goes again in the summer months.

There are also wooden boats that have been traditionally used to ferry livestock across the lake, heritage fishing equipment and traditional wooden skis. If you only have an hour or two, then that is enough time. If you have longer, there is also a restaurant/bar and an apartment if you are wanting accommodation.

I went to the museum with a group of cavers, but this would be great for anyone with an interest in the natural processes that shape our environment. A most engaging way to understand the processes of water and karst. The audio has options for six different languages.

The seasonal lake Cerknica is a karst polje . This means it is only present sometimes of the year and the rest of the time it is dry. This fascinating phenomenon has been studied for hundreds of years but at this museum you can watch a working model that shows the valley in exact replica and floods and then drains away. There is also a video about the life of the local people and how the changing water affects their lives and shows local customs.A really great way to understand what happens in this fascinating place.
