“What a gem”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

A bit off the beaten track but very well worth the effort to travel that little bit further. It is close enough to the areas main attractions. The staff were outstanding the accommodation nothing short of exceptional. It would be the ideal place for a romantic stay or honeymoon. The pool was good the gym ok. The food was fantastic and the service very friendly and helpful. If (when) I come back to Sri Lanka I will come back here.

Room Tip: Any chalet is good - great - fantastic

This is the second time we have stayed in this property. It is not only a convenient location to visit Anuradhapura and Sigiriya, it is also a relaxing and beautiful property to tarry. The staff was without fail, charming and attentive. The food has certainly improved since we were last there. The property is now more mature and looks even better. The chalets are spacious, clean and well appointed although still bugged by power outages. Complimentary bicycles outside every chalet. Beautiful pool. Free wifi. Grounds are very well kept and it is really lovely to be able to walk through the gardens. Riding available. Horses look healthy and well kept so a major plus for Ulagalla. We had peacocks and monkeys right outside our chalet! The 2 bedroom chalet with its own private pool and dining area is luxurious and worth splashing out for but not really suitable for families with very young children. The property is very badly signposted if you are driving. Look out for the Green Park store sign and the narrow unpaved ally next to it is the beginning of the road. The property is about 3km fm there.

Room Tip: Some rooms have shared plunge pools if you want to have added luxury.

A bike, a beautiful house / apartment, a pool, in the paddy field. Only 20 houses.
A dream - high quality, nice people. Nice staff - very clean. Food very good. Good restaurant in ancient colonial building

We had a wonderful time at Ulagalla. The highlights were many, the areas for improvement few.

The highlights included the rooms (luxurious with loads of space, spotlessly clean, stylish, peaceful, free and working wifi internet in every villa) and the grounds and facilities (wonderful wildlife, loved the bikes, the pool, the horses). We could and should say more, but all these things were fabulous. A great hotel resort.

What would have improved it a little for us would have been a greater number of guests. We think that would have resulted in a more vibrant restaurant and bar area which was dead for our time there for all meals. On this, it was odd for one of the charming managers (Ronnie) to welcome us saying the hotel was full which clearly it wasn't. The other minor gripe was the absence of good coffee in the restaurant. Again, not a good idea to make excuses or white lies ("the machine broke yesterday sir" or similar). Tell it as it really is for a proper trusting relationship with the guests and why not make proper barista coffee a standard or make guests pay a small extra charge.

Overall, we loved it and would recommend it.

We liked this hotel a lot. it was our first stop after a long haul flight from london and it was relaxing and stress free. Friendly , helpful and not pushy staff. Loads of space, the rooms are small houses around a rice paddy with views of mature trees. Each room has a bedroom, a completely separate sitting room, bathroom, small cooling plunge pool with a deck and loungers. The main building is a colonial "wallawa" house with high beamed ceilings and veranda. After dinner you can saunter home so you at least feel you are getting some exercise or you can travel by golf buggy! There are bikes at your room so you can cycle further afield to a lake with birds, crocodiles, lotus flowers and fishermen. Huge swimming pool but somehow placed very well and surrounded by flowering jacarandas. The hotel is 20 minutes drive from Anuradhapura. Any normally competent driver will be fine driving in Sri Lanka and it is a good idea to have your own car and drive yourself so you can pop in to town when you feel like it. The ruins and temples are a must and dinner at the simple Milano rest house in their garden is good.

Room Tip: I expect all the rooms are good. Ours were great.

This resort is one of the finest in the world I have visited. The chalets are spacious, full of luxury and built to perfection....honestly faultless. The ambience, staff and the food is par excellence.
Well recommended for any one to make a visit to this hide out which is truly unique!!

Room Tip: All chalets are good and nothing is special as all of them are so special. We occupied chatels 19/20...

The resort is nestled in a great environment and if you are a nature lover, well this is the place to be. From the gorgeous chalets to the plunge pools, its a great escape for a couple to unwind and relax. The bike rides through the paddy fields were definitely a pleasant and a fond experience that will be remembered.

Now for the negatives. Even though the address states ulagalla resort as a place in Anuradapura, it's actually not. It is about half an hour to 45 mins away from the Anuradapura town towards Dambulla. Another dissapointment is the food, it is not up to par with the exceptional standards of the resort. From dinner, dessert and even breakfast was not that great. Other than these minor let downs, the place it self is a treat and i would definitely go again :)
