This was the first hotel I had stayed in Sri Lanka - and I was surprised with the outstanding beauty of the place and rooms. My cottage had a private pool totally integrated to nature. So many animals that looks like we were inside a national park. The service was good. The only cons were the distance from the cottage to main building ( had to ask a cart all the time ) and sometimes food was not top notch. Anyway, I easily recommend this resort to explore the north of Sri Lanka.

One of the nicest resorts I have been to in Sri Lanka. Spacious, well designed private chalets set among scrubland and paddy fields this is a perfect place to get away from it all and just indulge. Each chalet has its own plunge pool, perfect for that romantic night time dip. The porevious reviews have said everything about what is great about this place but for me the service at Ulagalla sets it apart form any other resort in Sri Lanka or any I have stayed at in other countries. Ulagalla sets the bar when it comes to quality service. From the personal greeting at check in to the constant attention and friendly hellos from all the staff they go out of their way to make you feel welcome just as if you were a visitor to their own private home.

The one big disappointment was the food. Was not bad but considering the place and the very high prices it was far below the quality of a good restaurant in Colombo where you could get a better meal for a cheaper price. Additionally, activities such as kayaking are overpriced compared to current rates in Sri Lanka.

Still a fantastic place and if you are looking for a perfect getaway and can afford it would recommend staying there any time. An improvement in food would just make it complete.

We had a short break in Sri Lanka and were very happy to have chosen Ulagalla - the place is absolutely beautiful, almost like a hidden garden of Eden. The fact that they only have 20 chalets (only half were occupied during our visit) pretty much means that you feel like you have the whole place to yourself. The individual chalets are spread out across the grounds, and you would not see another person if you just spent your time lounging in the plunge pool. What you WILL see is entire families of monkeys, tons of birds and regal peacocks doing routine dances.

The chalet is really well designed and laid out - the bed is supremely comfortable, and the floor to ceiling windows all around maximize the lush greenery all around you. The only slight improvement they could make is in the shower - there is no space for toiletries so you end up having to keep things on the floor (not a major thing).

As you are pretty much in the middle of nowhere you end up having all your meals at the hotel - they deliver to your chalet, or you can go their main restaurant, or have a meal set up outdoors at various locations. We did go to the restaurant, but did not like the experience - given the small size of the resort, there was just one other couple eating, and it felt like a deserted restaurant with staff hovering. Eating in the chalet suited us perfectly well, and for the most part food was good. Breakfast was always great, with fresh fruit juices and fruits and a fresh bakery basket. Their salads were also great - straight from their own organic garden. The Sri Lankan food we had was all very tasty, but the Western meals were just average at best.

A big downside for Ulagalla is the fact that they are a good 4:30 hours drive from the airport on bumpy and dilapidated roads. If you are on a longer trip across Sri Lanka, and drive up from Kandy it may not be that bad. For us however, on a 4 day break it was a heck of a lot of travel back and forth. You can arrange a helicopter transfer which takes about 50 minutes from the airport area. At USD 2,000+ for the one-way transfer it was unfortunately out of our budget.

We did find some time to squeeze in a bicycle tour to Anuradhapura. The drive up there will take 1:30 hours, and we found the historic sites not to be so impressive. Next time we'll stay at the resort and enjoy that. However, do find time to go see Sigiriya - this is a unique site, and definitely worth the climb to the top!

Oh, and I almost forgot - the main swimming pool is absolutely fantastic. I had it all to myself and the view of the colonial mansion and the wonderful old trees was truly great.

Room Tip: If you want to quickly stroll to the main swimming pool, chalet 3 and 4 are the closest.

We only spent one night there in February 2013 as we had a very busy schedule in Sri Lanka.
We wish that we had spent three at least. It is a stunning place and very well managed with excellent food. It is however not very convenient for seeing the Cultural Triangle sights of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa as nearby roads are in a terrible state but perfect for Anuradhapura and the nearby bird and wildlife parks. Also perfect for just chilling out!The huge very private suites are top class.
Highly recommended!
Our travel agents in SL were SriLanka in Style and they were excellent with all our bookings throughout and provided us with our top quality and charming driver, UPS.

Yes Ulagalla is really an amazing and charming place, and it was the second best placed we stayed in on our 10 days trip in Sri Lanka.

The "resort" is made of 20 some bungalows (called chalets) very spacious, furnished with taste and up-to-date equipment and interior design. They include a nice balcony and a small pool/jacuzzi.

The reception after 5 hours drive from Colombo airport was very friendly, we easily arrange in-house dining for our evening (in-room in not appropriate for a bungalow, is it?). The food was excellent, and the menu offered enough choice for my taste.

In the morning cycling back to the common area for breakfast was fun even for the non biking members of the family. Breakfast was not extraordinary, but good with several options.

Staff was courteous and helpful and spoke good English.

We just regretted we just stayed one night so we can profit of the many activities offered (no for free) or just relax by the very large swimming pool.

Maybe a few things to consider:
- Ulagalla is really out of the way
- we were there in low season
- prices seems on the upper end even compare to the Aman in Galle
- the bungalow concept may be a less nice when it's raining
- the resort and part of the amazement is to see something so up to date, I wish it will age nicely

But really this first experience made us feel sad to leave

A wonderful resort comprising 20 "chalets" dotted around extensive grounds amidst jungle, rivers, lakes, rice fields and birds. A good location to combine visiting the Ancient Cities with relaxation. Each chalet has separate sitting room and bedroom, terrace and plunge pool and is very private. Either use a bike (2 provided per chalet) or call for a buggy to get to main house. Main house is colonial style with antiques, rugs and punka fans (electric - no punkawallah). Staff are friendly and helpful. Food and drink good. There is a huge swimming pool, a spa for me and a gym for him. Other activities include kayaking, nature walks, cycling and horseriding. I tried only the last - a lovely ride round the lake and through the village. Oh and a pool table in the lounge.

A wonderful place to stay with wild life all around in the most comfortable of chalets with large living space and dining area to big bedroom and luxury bathroom. We were based near to the main reception building so it was only a short walk to the wonderful pool for a swim and chill down with a nice glass of wine. In fact we cut short some of the sight seeing to be able to enjoy the resort itself and felt that it would have been better if we had taken the first day completely to relax and enjoy this magical place. I feel that the only improvement that could be made here is with the evening meals, the breakfasts were good.
We were very lucky as our driver Terance who collected us at Colombo airport and stayed with us throughout our week in Sri Lanka was great. A more careful and considerate person/driver you could not ask for. If anyone is considering a trip to Sri Lanka you could contact Terance on his mobile +94 776131875 or email teranceiroshana@yahoo.com who can arrange everything for you and make sure that you see the things you want to see. Believe me with the roads there you need someone who knows what they are doing.
While staying here we visited the Ritigala Elephant Transit Camp and feed the baby elephants and then had an exciting tour of the Eco National Park which became exciting with a very heavy rain storm flooding the rivers etc but we certainly did see many elephants. We also visited Anuradhapura and learnt about its wonderful history. The visit to the Dambulla Cave Temple was most interesting and finally our visit to Sigiriya to climb to the top. This si a totally amazing place. We then moved on to our next stop and will review this under the next Hotel.

Room Tip: Possibly to be near the centre so you do not have to use golf buggies etc.
