“A stop in Awash”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Stayed here en route from Addis to Djibouti with resident Ethiopian friends. We spent nearly a month travelling around Ethiopia and this is the only place where we felt ripped off as faranjis (foreigners). E.g. we tipped the staff for carrying our bags to our rooms but were explicitly told the tip was not enough and we should give more. We were also told the room rate was more than double that suggested by a recent Lonely Planet guide. We would have ordinarily felt the hotel was a welcome stop but given our experience I would rather have carried on driving.

I stayed at the Genet overnight as I was heading to Awash Natl.Park & Harar. It is central located amongst a lot of stores & resturants.Awash is more or less a stop for the night type of town. The Genet Hotel was a relief seeing that the rooms were basic yet very clean with queen bed had a mosquito net with Cable T.V. The rooms had showers with basic necessities in the room. The hotel has a restaurant on the premises serving local dishes. The office staff was friendly & resourceful,Recommend

Stayed here for a night on the way back from a field trip. What a pleasant surprise for a small town hotel! Clean modern room with shower (no hot water but who needs it with the heat) comfy comfy beds and air con.
Restaurant on the premises with simple but good food..... on which note ask for a room on the back wall to avoid noise from it and the adjacent main road (I had a room on the front and did sleep fine but the noise has the potential to be annoying)
Friendly and helpful staff who went as far as to run off to town to find a charge voucher for my phone. What more could you want and all for a smidgen over USD25.

Stayed at the Genet Hotel on the second-last night of our tour. As it is located in a small town ( Awash Saba ) we did not expect much. We were pleasantly surprised. Room was clean and adequate with tiled floors. Plumbing worked and the bathroom fittings were not falling apart. Mosquito nets were over each of the two twin beds. Hot water is not available at the Genet but this is not a problem as temperatures in the Rift Valley are higher than those in the Highlands.

The restaurant special is grilled chicken. This was cooked with rosemary and was really good...arguably the tastiest meal I had in Ethiopia.

The hotel is on the main road from Dire Dawa and Harar to Addis Ababa so there is traffic noise all night as the trucks and buses travel in each direction. And then, around dawn, there is the chanting from the churches and mosques, Use earplugs if you are a light sleeper!
