On my two week hike through Jotunheimen, I hiked over Besseggen ridge, bathed my feet in glacial melt water, hiked through quiet mountain top valleys, over and around waterfalls, explored glaciers and forests, I saw wild reindeer, ptarmigans and lemmings..

There were days of constant, soul destroying rain, days of blazing sun, and also blizzards.

I did the trek over Besseggen, up Glittertind and Galdhoppigen and back to Gjendeshiem, and it was the most amazing thing I have ever done, I want to go back!

Don't just do Besseggen, do the whole thing! Besseggen is beautiful, but it can get VERY busy, even queues form. The rest of Jotunhiemen is more peaceful.

I think the Besseggen Hike shall have its own search word at Trip Advisor and not be hidden under "Jotunheimen National Park" which is so much more.
Besseggen is probably Norways most popular mountain hike attracting several thousand hikers every year. You can either start at Gjende (paid parking) and walk to Memurubu where you can take the boat back to Gjende or, better, start with the morning boat trip from Gjende to Memurubu and walk Besseggen back to Gjende. This is better of two reasons. First you do not need to rush in order to catch the last boat to Gjende, second you will climb the ridge upwards instead of downwards which is far more pleasant.
The hike itself is quite long and demanding and shall only be undertaken under stable wheather conditions. It took us 8 hours including breaks. It goes between the lakes of Gjende and Bessvattnet. The ridge (egg) itself is halfways and requires easy climbing but it is nowhere exposed. The view is stunning over the Jotunheimen mountains and the two lakes.
If you are reasonably fit and properly equipped it is definitely worth the effort.
There is no fee for the hike as such but the parking fee is 100 Nkr and the cost of the boat trip is 120 Nkr per person.

We came by car to Gjendesheim. There is day parking at by the boat dock for NOK 100 per day. We got on the boat from Gjendesheim to to Memurubu, a 20 minute boat ride.
We then walked back over Besseggen. The hike took exactly 7 hours including several short breaks to catch our breath, and a 15 minute stop for lunch.

The start of the hike is about one hour of steep upwards. Also when starting to go over Besseggen, you will have to climb, it is very steep on the sides, and if you are terrified of heights, I do not recommend this hike. If you have normal physical condition you should be able to to this hike, we met older people and also kids on the route. The scenery is beautiful, Norway at its best. And you do get a tremendous feeling go accomplishment once you have finished the hike.

This is a very popular hike so you will not be alone in the mountains.

Remember to wear warm layers of clothes, even if it is summer it can get rather chilly. Also do not pack more than you need, as you don not want to carry a heavy back pack when climbing the steepest parts.

The mountain lodge at bot Gjendesheim and Memuburu serves food.

This is one outstanding hike. There are several ways to do it depending on how long you wish to walk, whether you wish to camp etc...
If you have two days to spare and wish to do a fair amount of walking, i would suggest the following:
Day 1:
Arrive at Gjendesheim (by rental car if you have one) in the mid morning. Leave the car and take a small back pack with food, warm clothes and anything needed for 1 night away. Follow the signposted routes up the mountain. You will start walking uphill immediately. The uphill lasts for around 2 or 3 hours. Once at the top, you walk flat until going back down again. The views are outstanding. Follow signs for Memurubu which is where you'll spend the evening. It is a fairly large tourist hut which provides an evening meal (very substantial and hearty) and breakfast. The whole walk from Gjendesheim to Memurubu will take between 6 and 8 hours.
Day 2:
You can either take the boat back from Memurubu to Gjendesheim, walk back the way you came or walk along the shores of the lake. We chose the latter. It takes about 3 or 4 hours and is a mostly flat, simple path. It is extremely picturesque!
