“Remote and rustic”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Remote, peaceful setting, with a good restaurant and bar. Note that though you can get there without a 4x4, once you are there you can't get to the coast unless you have a 4x4 or pay for organised trips from the lodge. I've never stayed anywhere that offered so little information to visitors, - on arrival we were just handed a list of trips and prices with no further details There are no welcome/information packs in the lodges, no maps ( I was directed to a painted one on the wall that was useless!). The lodge we stayed in was marketed as "luxury" but though it was lovely it was really rustic - main bedroom opened into the kitchen/dining area, there was no outdoor table, no complimentary tea/coffee, no toiletries other than a small bar of soap and a single towel each. It did have a plunge pool but it was too cold for that! I would recommend the surfing/snorkelling trips with beach picnic organised by Trevor who runs the bar/restaurant business on the site - he is a great host and a mine of useful information about the area. We didn't have such a great experience with the trips run by the lodge - the sundowner cruise on 2 of the lakes lacked any informed commentary (apart from "hippo" and "heron") or hospitality. The coast is absolutely stunning and unspoilt but even with at 4x4 it is quite a mission to get there. I believe you can use the local accredited guides but again, there's not much information. The assumption made by the Lodge seems to be that you are South African and used to the area and able to arrive with a car load of supplies but we and many of the other guests were visiting from Europe and needed a more welcoming and helpful approach from the Lodge.

We stayed in their tented camp.

Lovely area and each tent have its own shower and toilet. The boma and kitchen were also well equipped. However, some of the tented units had electrical light bulbs which give off sparks - dangerous. Further, no towels or soap were found in some of the tenst, luckily we were camping the day thereafter so we could use our own. To top this, after we left, we were accused of having taken the towels and soap - that is a bit low I would say. Further, they tried to sell us wood for the boma in a small bundle for R60 whereas such a small bundle will cost me R15 to R20 in the city.

A lovely place with so much potential - just a pitty they want to rip off clients.

We only stayed one night during our south-Africa trip but wished it could be more. We had a very nice two close to eachother wooden huts with our privat swimming pool in front. One hut has also everything for self catering. Very charming and wonderfull spot after a few kilometers drive on sandy roads ( no problem because we were picked up).
Very good and tastefull restaurant/food and very hospital staff. This place we really recommend everyone. It's close to the 4 st lucia lakes and easy for the trip to the estuary for snorkling.

Spend 4 nights self catering at Kosi Bay. Simple chalets with an open Kitchen and a deck with fire pit. The lodge is close to Kosi Lake in the sand dunes. No AC, no TV but well maintained and clean huts.
You can take a short walk to the lake, but apart from that you need a 4x4 or book an activity as there is very little else to do. Suited us fine, it was a relaxing place. Ate at the restaurant one evening and that was ok food. There is no shop at the lodge, but its a 10km drive (some via sand road) to the little town where you can stock up. Did a lake cruise one day which takes you around 3 of the Kosi bay lakes. Nice way to spend 5 hours and watch some birds and hippos.
Staff were very nice and friendly. All in all good place to relax.

We booked off of the advise of Trip Advisor and even chose Chalet 11 off the request and we had the most amazing 5 nights.
Chalet 11 was amazing it was actually 2 chalets joined together private sparkling pool for the hot evenings.
We went snorkling and even turtle watching.
Great company and great food at the retaurant (must book)

Room Tip: use trip advisor and when booking tell them your preference and they can recommend as well, very kno...

What a fantastic family weekend....
The new privately owned units (Kosi Bay Lodge Private Chalets) are an absolute winner. Each chalet comes with its own swimming pool, deck, fire place, etc. If you don't want to head out to the beautiful beaches or game parks in the area, you can simply spend the time at the unit and just relax.

If you don't feel like cooking your own meal, the lodge has a restaurant which serves good-value-for-money meals at all meal times. Especially good are the burgers and the fish...

The beaches in the area are impeccable, clean and quiet, and very kids friendly at low tide.

The staff are extremely friendly, good with children and go out of their way to accommodate your needs. A special thanks goes out to Enoch, Michael and Thulani.

What an awesome experience.

The Accommodation was affordable, rooms basic and clean with air conditioning, mosquito nets were past their best and totally ineffective. Hot water in the rooms proved to be problematic at times. The lodge staff were friendly and attentive with special mention of Patience, Enoch and Thulane, who couldn't do enough for us.

Unfortunately the accommodation and restaurant/ bar accounts were separate and this led to major account discrepancies which proved to be difficult to resolve and was the source of frustration. Having said as much, the food was of a good standard and more than acceptable.

We had fun and enjoyed our stay.
