“Excellent way to spend part of an afternoon”

We arrived on a winter's day - when darkness comes at 5 PM. As such, after a morning visiting other attractions in Rotorua - we were looking for a mid-afternoon event that was fun but not exhausting - and one where we could get back before dark. The 4 of us (2 adults; 17 year old and 11 year old) showed up 30 minutes before the demonstration - and stayed until they closed. Here's why?

1.) The 30 minutes before enabled us to see a variety of local birds (e.g. falcons, moreporks) and have time to do it justice

2.) The demonstration was both educational and fun. All the kids (and adults) had the chance to have a falcon perch on their glove covered (supplied at Wingspan) wrist.

3.) The people working there were patient enough to answer every question put to them. In fact, at the end, my 17 year old mentioned that she wants to study birds at university. The staff member spent over 20 minutes talking 1-on-1 with her about owls, the morepork, and how to get into a good university. We were truly impressed.

4.) The signage was great; explaining the birds' history and why they were there.

All in all, a great way that we spent 2 hours.

I had read about Wingspan in an article on Lake Challice vineyard and did a little hunting to learn more. A year later I finally got the opportunity to visit. What a great afternoon. I never would have thought that I'd be able to hold a falcon. The staff were great and plenty of great info on these awsome birds. I can't wait to head back again.

Wingspan had good information about birds in general and a close up look at them in the aviaries. The demonstration and talk was particularly informative and an experience not to miss.

The kids all got to have a falcon perch on their arms while it ate from their hands (with a leather glove on of course), which is one of the highlights of our animal-loving daughter's trip.

The biggest problem (because we hadn't found anywhere for lunch first) was the lack of food available.

Karearea (NZ falcon) are rarer than kiwi and this is the place to see and interact with these special birds (and with Ruru- morepork) Every time we visit we learn more and always have an amazing encounter with the passionate advocates for the birds, and the birds themselves

First time visitor to the centre. Bitterly cold day so would recommend wrapping up warm as the aviary is vey exposed. Enjoyed the flying display and staff were very passionate about their plight.
