A very friendly hostel. Excellent friendly Managers happy to help. Good food, warm rooms and a wonderful location. Stayed here over Easter with a a large outdoor group...it can't have been easy to organise but the atmosphere was lovely. Breakfasts were excellent and a good start to the day. Parking is a bit of a problem but with a National Trust sticker for the car park it is a difficulty easily overcome...there is also free parking a bit further up the road. Cosy and comfortable. Easily accessible walks for all levels.Would be very happy to stay again.

We have stayed at the hostel on several occasions . It is located on the edge of the village and offers simple accommodation at a great price . The staff are really helpful. The local pub is really good and just round the corner. The only drawback is there is no parking but some in village which is free ifyou are in the national trust.

OK. This place is battered, just accept that and enjoy the stay. The staff are brilliant. The location is wonderful if you enjoy walking. Its about 150m to the good pub (Brittania) which is a one pub beer festival. Kitchen is a bit tight but that's normal. Wash rooms impeccably clean despite being heavily used.

No car park at the hostel but there is one about 150m away that is operated by the National Trust. It's free if your an NT member and if you are not, why not?

Room Tip: Decline room 4 - it's next to the gents - gets a lot of night visitors.

Stayed here with a group of friends for 2 nights in October. It's one of the smaller hostels that I have stayed in, with the lounge and dining area sharing a large room. The members' kitchen is a decent size. The bathroom was large enough, and there are 3 showers for which I never had to queue.

Breakfast was nice and good value at £4.95, with help-yourself cereals and fruit, and served cooked breakfast. We didn't eat an evening meal at the hostel, but I can really recommend The Britannia Inn which is just a few minutes' walk away. It's quite cosy in there, with a few small rooms, but we were lucky enough to get a table on both nights. Food there was great, and they had at least 6 real ale pumps on.

The lady on reception (possibly the manager) was very friendly and talkative and gave us some good tips on where to walk in the Langdale valley.

There is no parking at the hostel, but we parked just outside the village near a cross-road junction. Approximately a 5 minute walk from there.

A great little, old school hostel. Sure, it's a bit worn around the edges but not in a way that detracts from the pleasure of staying in this haven of tranquility. The staff are friendly, informative and on the ball, it's spitting distance from one of the best pubs in the Lake District and the breakfast set me up for a day on the fells. The self catering kitchen has seen better days but is still functional and allowed me to whip up a spot of supper. Recommended.

Just returned from a stay at Elterwater YHA, great hostel in a great location. The hostel has good facilities and breakfasts are excellent and very good value. The biggest asset to the hostel however is the staff, Charley and Nigel, who couldn't have been helpful in the hostel or knowledgeable in giving advice about the area.

Elterwater YHA is a decent youth hostel in a great location. We received a warm and friendly welcome and the accommodation was just about as expected: a small twin room (bunk beds) but in need of renovation (as was the hostel generally). I can't give more than 3 out of 5 given that we paid £49 per night. This may sound cheap, and I know that accommodation in the Lake District tends to be expensive, but when you consider what you get at, say, a Premier Inn for a similar price, it is not great value. You make your own bed, bathrooms are communal, you provide your own towel and breakfast is not included. I have stayed in youth hostels before and so knew all of this before I went but I did expect a bit more for my money in this day and age.
