“Beautiful Villa near Chania”

Six of us stayed at Villa Dimi for two weeks during the peak season and were all delighted with its design, amenities, overall vibe and location. The architecture of the house is beautiful and well planned for those who are vacationing together, yet want some privacy as well. The grounds are quite expansive and the landscaping lush and perfectly designed with fruit trees everywhere, flowering plants, night blooming jasmine and a real lily pond. The layout allow you lots of different picturesque locations to sneak off to be alone, several options for gathering together and bedrooms that are thoughtfully spaced out from each other. The pool area is particularly pristine with a high-end hotel feel, more modern than the rest of the house with its gorgeous and tricked-out cabana, lounges and outdoor shower. The pool itself is as nice as you'd want and the salt water is a welcome change from chlorine. The interior of the house is a mixture of modern and rustic touches, quirky but clean and just personal enough to give you the feel of a home (without the ickiness of staying in someone else's home). The high end amenities are all there - maid service, towels, welcome supplies with Cretan products, espresso makers, iPhone docs, bath products, kitchen supplies, A/C in bedrooms (needed in summer at least for Americans), internet, tv's, workout room.

Some of the norms in Greece took us some getting used to, but were not real obstacles or complaints. To add credibility to this glowing review, I will just say that the internet was sometimes undependable despite best efforts of the owner to resolve, the kitchen was well equipped but missing a few (inexpensive) things that felt essential to us as people who really cook for a two week stay, so we bought them. The ensuite shower and toilet rooms were functional but felt dated and basic compared to the rest of the house. Everything worked, but it was hard to get a really satisfying shower. My impression is that these are all fairly standard for Greece so we bucked up and got used to them as we did the tiny rental car with laughable A/C that pretended to be automatic, but was some kind of hybrid of manual and automatic that rolled down hills if you didn't keep your foot on the brake. Rental cars are not cheap on Crete, but perhaps we'd go premium next time. Extra towels for the beach would also be a good idea, as they let you take the villa's towels, but they are too large and really too nice to cart around. I would add that the owner of the villa was extremely responsive and kind when we contacted her about anything and when I asked if there was a blender anywhere to make cocktails, a new one arrived at our door the next day! The housekeeper Georgia was also a treasure, arriving daily to keep the house clean and answering any questions about the house and the area.

As far as the location goes, we thought it hit a sweet spot being close to Chania, quick to the airport, close to the village of Kounoupediana for groceries, local tavernas, drugstores, bakeries, etc, and easy driving distance to many good beaches. The town of Kalathas is closest, but doesn't offer much. There is a decent mini mart there and an ok beach of the organized, family type (not our thing), but not much else. The house is ideal for people who want to hang out together in a little secluded oasis. Although you can get to town or a beach in five minutes by car and to Chania and a lot of more interesting beaches in fifteen minutes by car, the villa is not truly walkable to anywhere. It is also not on the ocean, although you can see a sliver of it from the top level of the house. If it did have a serious ocean view, however, based on what else I've seen on Crete, the grounds would not be so large and beautiful, there would be a lot less privacy or the price would be double. To me, this seemed like a good trade off in making our decision and Villa Dimi felt like the perfect choice for our holiday. We would happily stay there again!
