“Fit for a Princess”
Reviewed September 7, 2006

A romantic surprise from my boyfriend, we stayed here for three nights during the second week in June. On arrival my boyfriend joked he was not important enough to walk on the red carpet, when the concierge heard him and said very seriously “but you are sir". Whilst checking in a porter took my suitcase from me "allow me to help you madam". The room was gorgeous and I cannot guess what the more expensive rooms are like when I already felt like a princess. This Hotel offers luxury and pampering and the best customer service I have ever experienced. All the staff are a credit to De Vere Smart, kind and courteous.

The downside, well something you can control. The urge for the mini bar, room service and pampering in the health club

I failed but un-miserably!!!!

  • Tips/Secrets — Resist the urge to room service and mini bar it gets expensive!

Stayed one night at Oulton Hall to entertain close family to a celebratory dinner. Received a very warm welcome from staff who could not have been more helpful. Room was well equipped and clean - somewhat larger than the average hotel room. Comfortable public rooms and very attractive grounds. Dinner was excellent and enjoyed by all. Good quality buffet style breakfast. No noise at night to disturb our sleep. All in all a very pleasant stay.

  • Liked — Staff helpfulness and courtesy/quiet room
  • Disliked — Smoking permitted in large groung floor room

Pulling up to the hotel on the Friday night, my boyfriend and I looked at eachother with huge smiles on our faces. The place was lit up beautifully and looked very grand.

We weren't sure where to park as the sign on the car park said it was full so we pulled up in front of the red carpet entrance where the concierge offered to have our car parked for us after taking our bags inside. The reception staff promptly gave us our room details and sent us off to our room. It was fairly late on in the evening so we opted to stay put in our room for the night, chill out in the bathrobes provided and have a couple of drinks. We were woken in the morning with room service breakfast which was lovely, our only gripe being that there wasn't quite enough room for all the pots and cutlery etc at the small table.

We spent our first day using the leisure facilities which were all top class and well equipped, and generally just took the chance to unwind. We had some late lunch and a few drinks in the bar, and once again we found no fault.

The rest of the weekend was equally lovely, we decided to go down to the buffet breakfast on the next 2 mornings to get us out of bed and found the choice to be brilliant.

Really couldnt have wished for a better place to stay, top end of the scale for price but the place was gorgeous and the lovely staff were extremely polite and helpful, and even though food and drinks were slightly expensive the relaxed atmosphere(and the alcohol) helped us to forget the price.lol Whats more our room seemed to be tidied whenever we left the room which we found quite funny.

Would recommend this hotel to anyone, deserved its 5 stars!!

One further note..... we did use the pub on the roundabout for a meal on the Saturday night. The food was lovely but I did have a bit of a strange experience there and was wondering if anyone knows whether its haunted. Definately worth a visit!

  • Liked — Beautiful building, great access to motorway network, bathrobes, comfy bed, lovely staff... what more could you ask for??
  • Disliked — Couldnt open our mini bar but that was probably a good thing after looking at the prices!! lol
  • Tips/Secrets — Use the pub off the roundabout for a cheaper meal/drink option

We stayed at Oulton Hall for one night in a standard room. The hotel itself is very grand and is in a beautiful setting in the countryside.

The bedroom was very spacious, clean and to a good standard. All staff very polite and helpful.

The one negative with the hotel is that it is extremely expensive for food and drinks.

  • Liked — traditional grand old hotel
  • Disliked — the prices!

We stayed one night in July. The hotel is in a beautiful setting in the countryside, and the building looks great from the outside. When we arrived (on a Saturday) there were three wedding receptions going on, although they kept themselves to themselves.
1. The hotel's communal areas (entrance hall, bar, lounge) look very grand and are certainly 5* standard.
2. We didn't feel that our room was worthy of 5*; the room was clean and tidy, but the decor looked tired, dated and unimaginitive, and was more like a 3* hotel. We would have expected something a little special. We have stayed in several 5* hotels, all of which had nice touches in the bedroom (e.g. luxury toiletry brands and bathrobes in the bathroom). But we didn't feel that there were any such touches at Oulton Hall.
3. We couldn't get a table in the hotel's restaurant on the Saturday night so followed others' advice and went to the pub on the roundabout for a very nice meal. We did have breakfast in the hotel, and followed the hotel's advice to go early to beat the rush. The breakfast was ok; fairly standard buffet style with reasonable choice.
4. We used the hotel pool; very nice for relaxing in, but a bit crowded and the wrong shape (square) for swimming lengths. We didn't use the gym but it looked excellently-equipped.

  • Liked — Grand setting and the smartest hotel for miles around
  • Disliked — Very ordinary room
  • Tips/Secrets — We only paid £110 for a double room for one night... shop around for a deal.

We had a wonderful mid-week stay last week. The rooms were great, the location and grounds were stunning and the food and service was just outstanding.

This hotel is in a beautiful setting and the building itself is impressive. The breakfast was nicely done and the bar at night was comfortable. It has easy access to the local bus that took us to the city centre. Only problem is that both nights we stayed there were weddings and a DJ playing beneath our room until the wee hours of the morning. As the first night was the day of arrival after an overnight flight this was particularly disturbing for us. The bass was particularly loud and the sound traveled clearly enough that I recognized many of the songs. I would not recommend this hotel if you want a good night's sleep. Or I would suggest that you demand a room that is far removed from the wedding celebrations (unless of course you're invited).
