We visited here just before Christmas for a wedding, the staff were polite and really helpful, but its over priced bar prices and the cold feel that the place has, not to mention the food wasn't that great (though is wedding food ever that great?) I wouldn't want to personally stay here, given that it is on the site of the very old mental assylum that used to be in these grounds its just a bit too spooky for me.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel this weekend as my works dinner dance was being held here.

The welcome we received from the Young Man on reception was warm, and the service from all the staff we came into contact with was polite and courteous, although a little slow in some instances.

We were given room 133 and upon first glance it would appear that the room is just a bit dated and in need of a freshen up, however on closer inspection the room was extremely dusty, especially the bedside lamps. There were strange marks on the top of all the furniture, as if the room had been painted without it being covered up, and most grubby of all were the strange white marks on the walls and the drawers of the bedside cabinets.

The lighting in the room was no good for putting on make up at the dressing table as it was just too dark.

When we tried to get ready on the Saturday I switched the shower on only to find that the water was tepid, my partner wanted a bath but the water was cold by the time I tried to run one. Upon reporting this to reception I was given an apology and the receptionist advised that she thought it was due to the weather and they were waiting for an engineer. When I spoke to reception in person a couple of hours later I was told that they didn't know why the water was off and we would be getting a £20 reduction from the room rate. Whilst this reduction was welcome it did not help the fact that what should have been a relaxing time away from home getting ready for a night out was a very quick dip in a cold shower, and also from reading reviews on here and speaking to other colleagues who were at Oulton Hall 2 weeks ago I know that there has been an ongoing problem with the water and frankly from a 4 star establishment this is not acceptable.

Breakfast on the Sunday morning was buffet style and chaotic, if hotels are determined to have a buffet breakfast then can they please think about bringing toast from the kitchen rather than having a toaster for dozens of guests to queue up an use while the rest of their breakfast goes cold, or vice versa!

The public areas of this hotel are stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed a bit of luxury in the Champagne Bar on the afternoon of our stay and the staff do their best, but this hotel is more of a 3 star in my opinion and the lack of cleanliness in the room is not acceptable in any establishment that offers guest rooms and needs to be rectified immediately.

If our dinner dance is at Oulton Hall in future we would be reluctant to stay again.

My husband treated me to a wonderful few days away at Oulton Hall and I must say I had an a wonderful time. We were in room 127 which was a good size room and the bed was so comfortable. We had booked a 2 night dinner, bed & breakfast package for £99.00 a night and the dinner is either a £30.00pp allowance on the a la carte menu, or a 3 course meal from the set menu. We ordered from the set menu on both nights and the quality of the food was very good. Breakfast is buffet with the option of a few dishes being cooked by the chef. We only had the food from the buffet which again was of good quality. The lighting in the hotel is not very bright, especially in the spa area and we struggled to see some of the signs on the doors but does not take anything away from the hotel. The pool area was very clean and you don't need any coins or anything for the lockers, these are locked by setting your own 4 digit code so you haven't got to worry about carrying a key or looking for change. We also had afternoon tea in the Drawing Room which was a delight.

We did have a couple of issues during our stay but these were pointed out the hotel and as they were made aware of the problems, they were able to address and apologise for these. On our first night in the restaurant, there was a very long hair in my dessert. We advised the waiter of this when the dishes were being collected, we didn't make any complaint or anything, however the waiter came back shortly with a glass of champagne each with their apologies. Also, on the morning of check out, a copy of our bill was posted through our door so we were given the chance to study this before check out, however there was a bottle of wine on the bill which we didn't order. We spoke to reception who checked our bill against the restaurant and they were able to see that there had been a mistake so this charge was removed from our bill.

I would definately recommend Oulton Hall despite these issues. This goes for all hotels but if they are not made aware of any issues while guests are there, then there is little they can do to resolve these.

One night stay on business.

Great facilities for conferences. Good professional services from the staff.

The rooms were well presented
Fine period decor throuhgout the hotel with bar and reception rooms.

Has golf facilities but not too much use as the snow was laying on the ground :-) Also has leisure facilities / gym.

Good location for local attractions including ski village near Castleford.

Only about 5 minutes off the M62 and just one junction East of M1 along M62.

Would like to return - well worth a visit.

I recently stayed here on business with clients, I have to say we were not dissapointed. The hotel is set in extensive grounds and has a golf course, gym & spa. The hotel is an old country house and has the style you expect from a De Vere hotel. The champagne bar and the adjoining room has a relaxed atmosphere and is a pleasant place to spend the evening. The restaurant has two menus, the set menu is £30.00 for three courses. The only downside is the price of the wine which is a little expensive.

Just arrived home after having another relaxing overnight break with my three friends. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left we received 5 star service. The three course evening meal was to die for, we savoured every mouthful. Breakfast was spot on, more than enough choice and cooked to perfection. Everyone we came into contact with were extremly professional and friendly. It was two of my friends first visit and both stated it would not be their last. Would highly recommend to everyone.

Fantastic place to stay!
The rooms are pure luxury. We stayed in a superior double which had a wet room and the biggest bed ever!Nice touches were the two small bottles of baileys which were complimentary and the box of yorkshire crisps.
Lovely decor throughout and very attentive, friendly and proffesional staff.
As everywhere there were a couple of bad points though.
Cobwebs on the bedroom ceiling.
Breakfast not being topped up quick enough, danish pastries cold.
The price of food is scandalous! We ate in the claret jug where a chicken salad sandwich,a portion of chips and coleslaw were £16!.We counted 10 chips in our £4 portion!
All in all though a lovely weekend in a lovely part of the world.
