“Great food but lacking atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2013 via mobile

I cannot fault the choice or quality of the meal that we had- great flavours and well cooked. The beetroot, Gorgonzola and rice balls were excellent and I shall try to replicate these at home. Quite a wait between courses, but that's what you get for freshly cooked food. Parking is difficult, particularly if you have a member of your party who has any walking difficulties, and the atmosphere was spoilt by one table of four who felt that they had to shout and ruin other people's lunch. Staff should have asked them to tone down their shouting! Toilets clean, but basic as you would expect for a country pub. Waiting staff friendly and with the right level of attention. Hope to return.

“Excellent pub.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2013

Taken to pub to celebrate 67th birthday. The pub is of the beaten track but is well sign posted. The car park is rather small, SO what ever you do, don`t park in the so called private road adjacent to the pub.I say so called because the sign appears home made and when we attended was obscured by a parked vehicle. Two very nice ladies came into the pub and and asked me to move our vehicle. After apologizing to the ladies was confronted by an obnoxious individual who was anxious to impress the ladies, so be warned. The pub is cosy and the ambiance is very pleasant. The staff, food and service are really first class (although the landlord wasn`t impress with my birthday jumper)yes I suppose you could argue the food is expensive, but these days you only get what you pay for and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.Booking is essential.

“Excellent food, service and ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

This was a country pub for ever and has now been reinvented as a high quality restaurant. There is still a bar if you just want a drink and the choice is good for real ales and so on. It is a warm cosy place and the ambience is very pleasant. The only downside is that it gets so busy that parking can be an issue. You end up parking along the country lane and walking back but that isn't too much bother.

The food is a little bit nouvelle cuisine for my tastes - hence portions are not too generous. My wife and our guests thought it was fabulous. Think 'Masterchef' rather than 'Hairy Bikers'. Taste was excellent, service from the delightful waitresses was first class and washed down with some ale there wasn't much to complain about on a cosy winter's evening.

Prices were a bit steep I thought: about £7-£9 for a starter and £16-£22 for mains. Sweet courses about £7.00. These prices are becoming more common which I think is getting too high. Our total bill for 2 people was over £75 including drinks. A similar night out at our favourite high quality curry house including copious amounts of Cobra/wine would be about £50-ish.

My main reservation about this place is that there were quite a few hooray henrys (now middle-aged) in there. Overheard conversations tended to be of the "Oh, isn't it a pain getting planning permission on a listed property?!" or "...I was hoping to at least get my money back on the Porsche..." variety. But if you can put up with that (or can compete by declaiming loudly to your companions "...St. Lucia is getting sooo expensive these days but we do adore it...") then the place is a very attractive venue and the food and service superb.

“Best pub in Sussex”

Wonderful food and service. The menu is always changing and everything on it is to die for. The staff couldn't be nicer what a find. I honestly can't fault it.

“superb”

Really excellent example of best of modern approach to cuisine in relaxed atmosphere. Difficult to want to go to more formal traditional restaurant when this opportunity is available .
