Davolja Varos (Devils Town) is a fabulous geomorphological phenomenon close to the border with Kosovo.
To reach these amazing red stone structures, which are up to 15metres in height &capped by a flat stone of a black colour to give a mushroom effect, you need to buy tickets at the entrance (350 dinar). There is a well marked path uphill past wooden sculptures, an old Saxon mine &red springs (which have a pH of an incredible 3.5) before you climb a series of steps to 2 different viewing platfirms offering excellent views of these structures &the beautiful surrounding countryside. You pass the tiny St Peters Church on the way back diwn.
There is a bar/cafe &gift shop at the entrance.
To walk round the whole of 'Devils Town' takes approximately 1.5 hours.
The site is not too easy to reach by public transport but we went with a taxi from Nis which cost us 50Euros to include waiting tine. The journey from Nis is around 1.5hours.
Davolja Varos is like a mini Cappadocia &definitely worth. visiting.
