Review of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection

Spent 7 nights here and it was excellent. I was attending a conference at the Hapuna, and I know I made the correct choice of hotels. The Mauna Kea felt more intimate, and the views from the room worth the 30 hour trip to get there.

I would stop there again in a flash,

Home away from Home!
Go somewhere else , we love it! You don't have to.My family and I've been travelling to this destination since 1966. Though not able to go every year, it is home to me!
The beauty of this place is in it's simplicity. Rare Art, Natural plantlife and a knock your socks off setting are a tireless feature at the hotel.I now travel over twelve hours to get here every year...It's worth it!
Bring your snorkle, tennis racquet and book...it doesn't get much better....Oh and the rental clubs are first rate so you needn't shlepp them with you!
Hurry and start your memories now! The friendly staff and gentle trade winds insure your vacation to be memorable!!!Thank you for such a place....mahalo

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
We have been to Mauna Kea 20 times in the past 58 years. Playing Golf, tennis and swimming. The meals have been excellent, the staff, always there when you need them. The clam Bake is outstanding. We can't tell you how much we have enjoyed our vacations at Mauna

An aging beauty needs a facelift....
My husband and I recently spent a week at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Our first impression was that it was worn down, drab and needed some color. Our spirits lifted when we found our room to be very neat and clean. We later learned that the service was impeccable. I've never seen such happy and efficient staff. From the chambermaids to room service to the bartenders at the pool bar - if you wanted it, you got it - and quick, without attitude (surprisingly a big plus, even at expensive hotels). The beach was amazing and the drinks nice and stiff. After growing to love the people and the atmosphere at the Mauna Kea, we realized that the hotel just needed a face lift to bring back its one time splendor. While some of the other hotels nearby were prettier and more vibrant, I think we'd go back to the Mauna Kea regardless.

Wonderful place to stay
We stayed at the Mauna Kea for 8 days in February. I've read other reviews and I do not agree with the "old and tired" rating which was posted. The hotel is beautifully cared for. Everything was clean and well maintained. We were in a mountain view room originally but on the first night the lights from the driveway were acting as an alarm clock for me (I am hearing impaired). When I informed the front desk the next morning, even though the hotel was full, they upgraded us to a beach front room immediatly and at no charge. If you want to sit on the Lani for any part of your vacation, get a beach front or Ocean view room. The mountain views seem to all face some part of the driveway which is very busy. The Breakfast buffet was included with our room and the food was plentiful and very good. The longest wait for to be seated was 5 minutes. We did the clambake at $80 per person and it was OK. We skipped the Lu'au to play golf so I can't speak to Lu'au but If you are a golfer, this course is fantastic. We ordered room service and the food was fantastic. Better than some of the high end restaurants I've been too. The best part of this hotel is the beach. Although it is a public beach, access by the public is limited by the hotel. It is never crowded, even when the hotel is full. The sand is great and no surf shoes are needed for swimming. Everything at the hotel is a little pricy and the hotel itself is in a remote area (about 30 minutes to town) but we found the Waikoloa Village (about 10 minutes south on the right) which had a general store, shops, restaurants, and even a gas station. The staff at the Mauna Kea was very helpful and friendly. They bent over backwards to make sure everything we wanted or needed was provided for us. All we had to do was ask. If you are looking for a party every night, or non stop action, you'll want to stay in Kona, but If you want a relaxing vacation in a lovely quiet setting, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is the place to go. Beautiful Beach & Serene Setting
We stayed at the Mauna Kea for 6 nights in January. The biggest upside to this property is that the hotel fronts a beautiful beach with no other properties on it. Plus the resort has wonderful mature landscaping.
Although, the hotel was full we did not feel the crowds and were the only ones walking on the beach after 9ish each night. The guests seemed to be a combination of golf enthusiasts, retired couples, young families and convention goers.

We paid $325 for a top floor mountain view room including breakfast buffet. We were happy with the room - comfortable king sized bed, clean, big bathroom and closet space, mini-refrigerator and cleaned 2x per day. When we arrived our refrigerator was stocked with a complimentary bottle of champagne and fresh fruit. There was a good sized lanai but it looked down on the entrance to the hotel so we did not end up using it. If you can afford to pay for an ocean or beachfront room I would recommend it.

We were disappointed with the restaurant choices in the area - mostly overpriced resort restaurants and the remote setting limits your dining options. Suggest Roys in Waikoloa Village and Café Pesto for a cheaper pizza meal.

I have the feeling that the Mauna Kea used to have more of an aloha spirit than it does now. The staff varied widely and on many mornings we noticed the staff to be fighting amongst each other at the restaurants.

Overall we were very happy with the Mauna Kea and recommend it for anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation.
