Hapuna Beach state park is a beautiful white sand beach on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. It’s very popular, but it is large enough to handle a crowd well. It is ideal for families and visitors of all ages. On the right day, the surf is ideal for beginner to intermediate body surfing. Sand castles abound. Make sure to check the flag conditions — green, yellow, or red — and act accordingly. On yellow, and on red especially, there is quite a north-to-south rip current about 40-50 yards out or so. The other caution I’d offer is regarding wind conditions. On very windy days, the sand blows steadily along the ground level, making laying on a towel uncomfortable. A sturdy umbrella laid in the sand or a simple beach chaise lounge will solve that inconvenience easily.

If you really want a cool though somewhat $$$ experience, stay at the Westin Hapuna Beach, which features the north end of the beach immediately on the ocean side of the property, complete with private chaise and umbrella setup.

Mile long white sandy beach,, crashing waves, crystal clear water, level beach area for kids....what more can you ask for.... maybe more time. Bring the zinc oxide sun tan lotion to protect this beautiful area.

This beach is quite nice but the water seems to be rather rough in the winter and there are rocky patches to be mindful of. Swimming was supposedly prohibited on the day we went but some people were swimming and surfing anyway.
Toilets and showers are available. Parking costs $5.

Awesome beach but has been eroded fron it's former grand self. Weather was touch and go, meaning lots of wind and red flag days. But still a great spot to relax
