Hapuna is a beautiful sandy beach, never overly crowded. They have ample parking as well. Might not be the best option for families with small kids. Great for body boarding

Beautiful beach - soft sand - great views - warm water with nice waves. Would go back again.

The $5 parking fee is well worth it! Bring a cooler with drinks and snacks. You will need an umbrella as the sun is intense

We have visited Hapuna Beach several times and just wrapped up another trip there. The waves are just right for the kids to ply without getting hurt. The water is crystal clear and the sand is very soft. I’ve only visited the beach from the resort side, but the snorkeling on either side of the bay is great. You’ll likely see turtles (generally in the rocks on the resort side) and many other types of wildlife. It is one of our favorite beaches on the Big Island.

It costs $5 to park in the main lot but there is other parking on the sides. The cost is worth it as there are bathroom facilities, a picnic shelter, life guards, and fresh water to rinse off. The beach is wide and the sand is white. The ocean is exceptionally clear and the waves just enough to body surf but not enough to knock you down. There is no shade so bring umbrellas if you need it. There isn’t a lot to see snorkeling, this is really a ‘play in the ocean’ or ‘read on the beach’ place. Busy on the weekends but not uncomfortably crowded.

I wanted to do a review because, when doing our research before camping at the Hāpuna Beach A-Frames, I had a lot of trouble finding any information. We stayed the weekend July 26th, 2019, so all information is current as of then.

A-Frames
Somehow I managed to go all weekend without taking a photo of the cabin itself. The pictures you are able to find online are still accurate. There are four electric outlets inside and running water immediately outside your door. The interior has two built in "benches" that run the length of the cabin and a small 4 person picnic table on the far end. We were able to use one bench to store all of our gear, our two keikis slept in sleeping bags on the other, and we slept on our Queen size air mattress on the floor. Plenty of room for everything.

It can be get pretty hot during the day/early evening. We had a couple of small fans, but by the time the sun sets it was very comfortable.

It is a bit of a walk to the beach from your cabin. I'd approximate about a half mile or a little more.

Restrooms

The restrooms were clean and functional. There are two facilities, one for each 3 cabin cluster. My wife mentioned having to wait for the shower, but I didn't have any trouble on the men's side.

Common Area

There is a good sized kitchen/dining area for the 6 cabins to share. It includes a stove top (no oven), large fridge, coffee makers, and out door grill. While we were there, we didn't have any trouble getting access to the stove and grill when we wanted it. The fridge was pretty full with other camper's supplies, but we had planned on storing in coolers anyways.

Keep in mind, if you get cabins 1-3, it's a bit of a hike to the kitchen area.

Overall Experience

We were very happy with our time at the campsite. Everything was comfortable and convenient to the point of being barely camping. The fixed structures were necessary, because it gets very windy at night.

We had stayed at Spencer's the month before and felt they were about equal. We liked Spencer's because of its proximity to the beach and parking. Hāpuna wins out with its amenities.
