This is my fifth visit to the Orchid.
I return year after year despite having many opportunities to stay elsewhere. This resort always provides a lovely room, excellent service and wonderful surroundings.
The Orchid, in keeping with other Fairmonts, is not a party hotel, or a place to eat or drink cheaply. It is a quiet luxurious resort that caters to people who can afford to spend a considerable amount of money and expect the best. It is not a place for those on a budget or those expecting an exciting nightlife.
It is located about 40 minutes north of Kona, near several other resorts.
There are several types of rooms and you pay according to the type of view you desire and whether or not you want to be on a "gold" floor (their hotel within a hotel). All the rooms have a lot of space and huge well appointed bathrooms. All have a balcony or patio. Most rooms have some view of the ocean.
The beach is a small, man made cove, which is relatively protected from the currents and has an excellent snorkeling reef immediately outside it. Even small children can safely swim there.
There are plenty of chairs on the beach and very good service at the bar (located on the beach) and from the restaurant staff who ferry take-out to your cabana.
The pool is utterly beautiful as are the grounds.
There are three restaurants for supper. Browns is the signature restaurant on the beach, which serves an eclectic menu and has a price list to match. Service is generally excellent and the food is very good. Norio's is Japanese and only open 4 nights per week. The food is superb and the service good. There is a cheaper restaurant on the beach, which is quite good too.
Just outside the resort is a small mall with three good restaurants; Tommy Bahamas, Ruth's Chris Steak House and a new, excellent Japanese restaurant. There is a free shuttle to this mall and they will come and pick you up when you call. You can also walk (1 mile) but it is very dark at night.
Things you should know before going there:
-the taxi trip from the airport is about 30-35 min and around $75. There is no shuttle.
-the hotel charges a resort fee at the beach to use the snorkeling equipment etc of $75/person/
-it costs $40/day for a cabana at the beach.
-drinks cost (on average) $14
-Breakfast buffet is $30/per person
-there is a Dollar rent a car on sight. Book early as there are limited cars. It costs about $100 for a taxi to go into Kona (one way) so renting a car is a better option
This beautiful resort continues to please year after year. We have already booked our return.
