“a quiet luxurious resort that never fails to please”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2012

This is my fifth visit to the Orchid.
I return year after year despite having many opportunities to stay elsewhere. This resort always provides a lovely room, excellent service and wonderful surroundings.
The Orchid, in keeping with other Fairmonts, is not a party hotel, or a place to eat or drink cheaply. It is a quiet luxurious resort that caters to people who can afford to spend a considerable amount of money and expect the best. It is not a place for those on a budget or those expecting an exciting nightlife.
It is located about 40 minutes north of Kona, near several other resorts.
There are several types of rooms and you pay according to the type of view you desire and whether or not you want to be on a "gold" floor (their hotel within a hotel). All the rooms have a lot of space and huge well appointed bathrooms. All have a balcony or patio. Most rooms have some view of the ocean.
The beach is a small, man made cove, which is relatively protected from the currents and has an excellent snorkeling reef immediately outside it. Even small children can safely swim there.
There are plenty of chairs on the beach and very good service at the bar (located on the beach) and from the restaurant staff who ferry take-out to your cabana.
The pool is utterly beautiful as are the grounds.
There are three restaurants for supper. Browns is the signature restaurant on the beach, which serves an eclectic menu and has a price list to match. Service is generally excellent and the food is very good. Norio's is Japanese and only open 4 nights per week. The food is superb and the service good. There is a cheaper restaurant on the beach, which is quite good too.
Just outside the resort is a small mall with three good restaurants; Tommy Bahamas, Ruth's Chris Steak House and a new, excellent Japanese restaurant. There is a free shuttle to this mall and they will come and pick you up when you call. You can also walk (1 mile) but it is very dark at night.
Things you should know before going there:
-the taxi trip from the airport is about 30-35 min and around $75. There is no shuttle.
-the hotel charges a resort fee at the beach to use the snorkeling equipment etc of $75/person/
week
-it costs $40/day for a cabana at the beach.
-drinks cost (on average) $14
-Breakfast buffet is $30/per person
-there is a Dollar rent a car on sight. Book early as there are limited cars. It costs about $100 for a taxi to go into Kona (one way) so renting a car is a better option

This beautiful resort continues to please year after year. We have already booked our return.

Room Tip: You don't need an "ocean view" room; partial ocean views are just as good.

We've recently stayed almost 1 week on the property. It is a very beautiful resort and well kept. Staff are all extremely friendly. The rooms are spacious but I am not a fan of the excessive marble in the bathroom and the tiled floors. We were on a ground floor room facing the waterfalls which I did not find very private as passers-by can easily look in.

We've tried meals at all of their restaurants apart from the breakfast buffet. The food whilst good, was extremely overpriced. We've also dined at Merriman's in Waimea and it is actually cheaper than Brown's Beach House and the food far more superior. There are not many restaurants near the resort hence this may account for the excessive charge. Try to shop at Foodland at the Mauna Lani shops as that can cut down some of your meal costs.

The $17 daily parking charge is ridiculous - almost everyone has a car as it is impossible to get around without a car in that part of the island unless you plan to stay, play and eat solely at the resort. They should just get rid of it and add it onto the room rate. But surely they can absorb this considering most rooms are in excess of $500/night!

Room Tip: North tower is quiet but further from the beach and reception. Try to get room not on ground floor f...

The hotel rooms, meeting facilities, customer and food service for our group's 5-day meeting were excellent. The beautiful, serene contemplative spaces (all with water features) in and around the hotel were a perfect reminder and support to stay balanced and peaceful amidst our company's high energy strategic planning session.

Reading "bin2010"'s review regarding the toxic poisoning reminded me that 7 years ago I had lobster at Brown's Beach House and had a serious allergic reaction, probably due to the bacteria from the Asian region from which it came. Browns did not take any responsibility when I told them either. Needless to say, I did not dine on property this trip, outside of meals served as part of our meeting.

We recently spent eight nights at this hotel and came away with the same feeling that all was exactly as we had experienced in Jan, 2010. Michaela Larson, Chef Concierge, was excellent in assisting us in restaurants, tours, etc. Of course, the hotel's Browns is still one of our favorite restaurants on the Big Island.

Room Tip: If you can afford a room with a view of the ocean, it is worth it. Please request it to be high ove...

My husband and I stayed here during his business trip. I had never been to Hawaii before and we aren't used to staying in any kind of a resort, but we were definitely not disappointed. While here we took advantage of various services and activities. I visited the spa for a manicure and the staff was very helpful. We used the gym several times. I liked that it was open 24 hours too. I also liked that each machine had it's own TV. We rented some kayaking equipment to go kayaking nearby as well. The grocery store is just a short bus-ride away. I'm sure many already know this, but be aware that the prices are a lot higher for things than what we're used to here on the mainland. For souvenirs and such, we were fine paying a bit more since it was a one time thing. All in all, I can't really think of anything bad that sticks out.

I had toxic poisoning on my wedding night from eating butter fish at Brown's Beach House and we were met with a doubting attitude! We didn't complain about the slow service on that particular night or about the ants in the bathroom every morning, but I cannot help but feel it necessary to warn others about the restaurant and the resort's lousy attitude because it just doesn't get any worse than being dreadfully ill on your wedding night and the next couple of days of your honeymoon, and to be treated poorly after spending that kind of money. There was no offer to compensate in any way for ruining our wedding night. This resort has how many stars??? It's really too bad because the resort itself is lovely, the grounds are gorgeous and the staff wonderful, but the managers have lousy attitudes and the way they prepare the butter fish is lethal.

The Fairmont Orchid's location and amenities cannot be beat. We walked the shoreline each morning, discovering something new every day.... sea turtles resting in the sand, tropical fish swimming in the fish ponds created as in the distant past, petroglyph fields that told the story of native islanders from long ago, and so much more. After swimming in the hotel's cove or exploring another part of the big island, we fell asleep each night in the most comfortable bed to the sound of the waves crashing onshore. Every person working there was pleasant and helpful. We couldn't have chosen a better place to stay.
