This hotel is beautiful!
It's the kind of hotel you picture when you think about going to Hawaii.
The grounds are beautiful with lush gardens and coy ponds.
If you are looking for a resort to stay on your entire visit this place is perfect. If you plan on exploring the big island you"ll be doing a lot of driving as this resort is pretty far from the action.
We never ate at the resort - it was too $$$$ for us. Thee is a little plaza up the street but still on the grounds where we would grab breakfast and snacks.

Room Tip: Ask for pool/ocean view otherwise you'll be looking at the parking lot.

The entire hotel was well kept and beautiful. Expensive, but worth it. Some of the design is starting to look a little dated, but that is just an opinion. I would go back again in a heartbeat. The beach and pool alone are worth the trip.

This resort is wonderful. My husband and I spent three nights here beginning Oct.12. There are no resort fees, free valet parking, and the rooms were divine. We were greeted with a lei, fresh juice, and a refreshing towel. Such a treat after our long flight. Room service is quick and so is ice delivery. A special shout out goes to Mel at valet parking. He gave great suggestions for restaurants and made sure we had towels and an umbrella for our excursions!
The rooms are beautiful and so is the beach. We borrowed snorkel equipment and spent the afternoon snorkeling in the bay. The petroglyphs trail was very interesting and the free shuttle took us around the hotel whenever we needed it.
There are shops and a grocery store at the resort for breakfast food or picnic food. There are also several restaurants.
Loved it here!

This property was perfect for our needs - a family of 4 with 2 teens wanting to relax for a couple of days island style!
I notice many reviews say the hotel is great for couples (which it is) but our teenagers loved this place with it's stunning scenery, the fishponds full of sea-life, the huge pool, hammocks, cabanas and smoothies in the cape cod chairs watching the ocean! Life doesn't get much better.
The Mauna Lani was the perfect place for some quality family down time without ipads and ipods and any other electronic device which seem so important these days.
This hotel is not exactly cheap, yet well worth the splash out for us making use of the anniversay special rate which brought it more towards our league. And the main reason I selected this hotel was for all the other complimentary things such as free guest laundry, bikes, snorkel gear, beach cabanas and complimentray shuttle to the Beach Club (excellent snokeling) and Mauna Lani Shops which were too far to walk in the heat.
Eating locally on a budget isn't easy as all the immediate surrounding restaurants are very pricey however we found Tommy Bahama to be the best value for money and the supermarket had a surprising selection of food that could be brought back to the room. We did eat at the Canoe House and whilst the ambience and service was very good we regret spending the money as the meal did not live up to the cost.
Our room was spacious and tastefully decorated with comfortable beds, a nice lanai and wonderful bathroom. We asked for a rollaway which was a hefty $65 extra per night but at least was a decent sized comfortable bed and made sleeping a lot easier for our family in addition to the 2 other queen sized beds in the room. Our only complaint was that our room interconnected with another and we could hear our neighbours quite clearly so next time I would ask for one that doesn't!
Finally whilst there is absolutely no need to leave the Mauna Lani make sure you don't miss Hapuna Beach just up the road and there also appears to be a lot of other small gorgeous beaches to visit but we just didn't have the time.
Will we be back? If they have an affordable deal..absolutely!!

We only stayed one night but it was awesome. I would definitely stay here again. We arrived a little early and our room was ready (at 1pm). The hotel is undergoing some renovations and we were bumped up from a standard/mountain view room to an ocean view. The pool was also being renovated, so we were given free parking and free snorkel equipment rentals, which I thought was fair. Our room (465) was beautiful! I love the traditional Hawaiian feel (with the dark wood closets, shutters for the lanai and pocket doors to the bathroom). The double/split sinks were also nice and the shower was wonderful. The property is unreal, it goes from lava fields to plush beach within a mile. The grounds are immaculate and the fish ponds are both beautiful and show the historical fishing practices of Hawaii. The beaches are fantastic, we witnessed one of the most incredible sunsets ever from the beach chairs. There are several beaches and the one that is farther away from the hotel (near the bungalows) is actually the best place to snorkel, just a short walk over to it. We saw all kinds of fish there and it was a good place for a beginner snorkeler like me. The staff was wonderful, from the cold lavender towels and shell leis upon arrival to the beach staff, everyone had the Aloha spirit. George gets a special shout-out, since he did an impromptu stand up paddleboard lesson with me, as I was struggling with the smaller board and waves. He was patient and wonderful. We ate breakfast in the restaurant, it was good but a little pricey ($35 for the full buffet and $21 for continental buffet). We also ate in the Canoe House, where everything was great as well.

I wish that we could have stayed longer, but we had to go home. This was a totally different experience from the eastern side of the island where we rented a vacation home for 4 days prior, it was a perfect way to say Aloha to Hawaii after a total of 9 days. I really don't know how the Mauna Lani could get any better (and we've been to some pretty swank places--Secrets, Broadmoor, Greenbrier, Excellence, Doral, etc.). I would rank Mauna Lani up in my top two resorts of all time.

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms are definitely worth trying to get.

We had a great stay at the Mauna Lani with a beautifully upgraded ocean view room. The room was updated and clean, but very average as hotel rooms go. The view was beautiful. The food was better than average but way too expensive for want you get. We found more success by heading down the road a bit to the Hilton complex where there was some decent shopping and restaurants. With respect to kids, it was not too great a place for swimming and the like. A very nice pool but no beach to speak of because it was all lava rock. Kids still had a great time but they were craving the beach. Hotel was very accommodating about leaving the room a bit later for our flight back to the states. There was a group room for showers and changing which was a bit awkward, but still convenient. Loved the concierge and front desk people. Bottom line it was a bit snobby for kids but still a nice place to spend a week in Hawaii. Oh yes, a rental car is a must!!

Room Tip: Upper floors provide the best opportunity for a view.

Other than Pueblo Bonito Sunset in Cabo, this is the best place I have stayed. Now, I am not a worldly traveler, but I have stayed in a good many hotels. I loved this Hotel a lot. I loved the staff here even more! They greeted us in true Hawaiian style with Lei's, warm washcloth and lots of Aloha!
The layout is beautiful. The ocean front is well laid out and peaceful. There were a few choices of live entertainment in the evening and many beautiful locations on the property to wander through.
My wife and I took some stand up paddle board lessons from George. George was very nice and shared quite a bit of conversation with us. He is your typical, old school beach boy. Pure Hawaiian.
The next time we come to the Big Island, we will be staying here and probably will not even consider anyplace else.
