The Mesen ridge is where the Ulster (Loyalist) and 16th Irish (Southern) fought side by side.
It is very tastefully laid out with slabs of stone lining the walkway inscribed with quotations of those who fought. There is an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. The Round Tower is built with stones from the old Workhouse in Mullingar. It is orientated so that at 11 o'clock on 11th of November the sun lights up the inside.
Mesen is 5 minutes south of Ieper and the Round Tower is visible just on the south side of the village. Go to see if in the area. It is free.
