Chateau de la Mouchere
Reviewed September 2, 2011

Two hours after leaving Paris we were on the terrace sipping wine and admiring the rolling landscape with our wonderful hosts, Marie-Monique & Roger Huss. Our room on the first floor had the most amazing bathroom, with a big 1930's style washbasin and shiny big taps. I think we had the only bath on that floor and this added to our sense of luxury.
Equipped with detailed maps we set off to explore the surrounding countryside. Having ordered in advance, we had a great roast chicken and "charlotte au poire" supper on Staurday night. Great cook and great service. Thanks for the loan of the wellies and raincoats!

Room Tip: You must love dogs as Carrington & Dalloway are part of the family!

La Mouchere is a beautiful house which has been very aesthetically restored and decorated. Not only is the country landscape very idyllic, the time spent with Roger and Marie-Monique are very special moments...be it plucking fruits or visiting the local market. Its a perfect place for a quiet getaway...will love to go back there any time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice and have their own special views out of the windows...

La Mouchere is owned by a franco-british couple who over the last two years have restored this 19th century manor house to somewhere near its former glory with love, care and attention to authentic detail. They offer bed, breakfast and an evening meal, ensuite rooms, wi-fi throughout, and spacious grounds for walking, relaxing or working.

Within easy distance of Caen (just over 2 hours drive), this place takes you back to the traditions and charms of rural France, situated between the market towns of Belleme and Nogent le Rotrou, in a forgotten but rather beautiful part of Normandy called Le Perche. Proust's 'Cambray' was apparently inspired by a small town nearby!

Whether you are looking for a quiet place to think and write for a few days (which is what I was doing there) or simply a treat, I can thoroughly recommend it. A car is pretty essential although you can get to Nogent by rail easily enough from Paris.
