Description: Elmar’s In The Valley is one of the best restaurants in the Swan Valley. It is a family friendly venue that celebrates traditional German and Australian cuisine in the tranquil surrounds of the Swan Valley in Western Australia. It is the largest German restaurant in Perth and the Swan Valley’s biggest beer garden with over two acres of lush green lawn and shady gum trees. Elmar’s in the Valley opened in 2005 after the success of two smallgoods stores in Highgate and Myaree. Unlike other German restaurants, Elmar’s in the Valley is not a German themed restaurant, it is German!

This 'German' themed restaurant/bar is nestled in the peaceful Swan Valley and is a great place to relax and enjoy a quite drink with friends. I enjoyed it, but felt it overpriced for the quality of food, low level of service, and reluctance of staff to accept anything but cash (credit cards appeared to be a real hassle for them). The location would have relatively low overheads, but that is not evident in the food menu.

You can eat inside our outside.

Inside is quite well furnished and has a broader menu. It would be best to eat inside on hot summer days or when very wet or cold during winter.

The outside beer garden has a very basic 'German' menu that compliments the German beers and theme. It is a brilliant location for a nice spring or autumn day. The boutique German beers were good, and reasonably priced at about $10 CASH only per pint. Our table of 4 couples all found the food very overpriced for the quality. My wife and I had a large share plate which comprised about 5 different types of German sausage, of all things corn chips, a few shriveled pieces of lettuce, cheese cubes, and a basic pork dip. It cost $34 and I would not recommend it. All four couples liked the beer and wine, but thought the food wasn't value for money. If we return we agreed that we would order the most basic food available so we could still enjoy the great surroundings, beer and wine on another beautiful spring day.

4 of us recently visited Elmars for dinner. Lots of choice, great presentation and good food. Beer was good, great selection of other drinks. Went to pay the bill - received a bit of a shock. This will stop us returning regularly as other than the price, you couldn't really fault it.

Our family of 7 adults and 4 young children enjoyed our lunch on a wet Sunday, and were surprised how crowded it was considering the weather. We ate in the main restaurant, and the service was excellent, and the food delicious. The prices are certainly high, but we'd looked at the menu on the website prior to going, so were prepared for that. For the budget-conscious, I'd recommend you always check the menu first, so you know what to expect. We ordered a dish for 2 which included tastings of 3 beers each, and that was very nice. The kids had a great time kicking a ball around on the grass outside, and getting wet.

Elmars is divided into three distinct areas, one a more formal restaurant, a bar area and a beer garden offering "pub grub" and light snacks. The beer garden was full the day we were there so chose to sit in the main restaurant. Being a Sunday, the place was packed and the atmosphere was vibrant, the beer made on site was good and reasonably priced.
Service was fairly prompt, despite the number of diners, and the waitress was friendly and well informed. We had a Tasting Plate (for 1), the Coarse Pork Bratwurst, a Scotch Fillet and the Elmar's Bratwurst Plate. The Tasting Plate was listed as an Entee and was quite reasonably priced as was the Coarse Bratwurst although this was quite bland and fairly tasteless saved only by the potato salad. The BBQ plate was expensive and very disappointing in content and quatity, for the price, $36.90, I expected far more. The Scotch Fillet was also expensive and unremarkable, well cooked I suppose but quite uninspiring.
Having a look at the Beer Garden Menu, it seemed like much better value for money and if we revisit Elmar's we will definitely choose the beer garden which was festive and more informal or, if full, go elsewhere.
In our opinion, the formal restaurant has the potential to be exceptional but our dining experience was disappointing with the food being expensive and definitely not living up to the "hype" we anticipated having read the reviews on the place. Maybe it just wasnt our day.
