You don't expect such quality from a restaurant near a service station. Admittedly, it lies outside the actual service area but you can walk from the parking area to the restaurant. And so you should. It is well worth it. Pleasant service, reasonable prices, lovely food, good menu and a relaxing atmosphere. We've now eaten here several times and it had always been a real pleasure. Recommended.

Restaurant was recommended from the guys at Normandy Inn and it didn't disappoint!

The menu options are good and my prawns with angel hair pasta were fab, although I struggled to eat the prawns without using my fingers. I'm a classy guy. Desserts were particularly great. Only slight disappointment was that the wine was nothing spectacular. I still managed to force it down though. Total cost came to just under €70 which for 4 courses each and a half bottle of wine isn't bad. Certainly not when the food is very good.

Hosts were really friendly and tolerant of us poor French speakers and spoke fluent English. All in all a good meal and well worth a detour if you are passing.

Les Bruyeres is just off the A84 and in fact used to be something of a 'greasy spoon' for passing road trade. Since being taken over by its young French owners, it's done its best to shake off that image, although it's still a popular prix fixe lunch spot for drivers stopping off at the nearby 'aire'. Recently, Les Bruyeres has started opening for a few nights a week during the summer months and our stay at the Normandy Inn coincided with that narrow window of opportunity. On entering the restaurant, one passes by the front dining area, which is presumably used at lunchtime, and enters a rather more up-market, taupe painted room which has a good feel to it. Menus are supplemented by specials chalked-up on a blackboard and there are various menu combination options. We chose the 'gourmet pose' (for 30 euro) which included an entre, a main, a cheese plate and a dessert. Noix de St Jacques (scallops) on julienne vegetables and Gambas (tiger prawns) done in a Thai style with noodles were fairly meagre in quantity (three each) and overcooked. The main we both chose - a white fish in a strange, burnt but chewy pastry shell with some julienne courgette - was under-seasoned and bland and the accompanying "creme de citron" was an alarming yellow colour with little taste of lemon. The cheese plate comprised three portions of rather cold and dried up cheese with some over-dressed lettuce. Desserts of a pressed chocolate cake with chestnuts and an orange biscuit and brioche with a rhubarb compote were adequate. Accompanying this, we chose a good bottle of Sancerre at 24 euro. Overall, we were underwhelmed despite the friendly service and pleasant ambience.

Whilst staying at the Normandy Inn B&B nearby (I have reviewed this too) we went to this restaurant just a short car ride away. You know when someone is trying hard and here there was no shortage of effort to create the perfect restaurant. It was small enough to be intimate, large enough to have an atmosphere with many clients. In fact it was practically full - not surprising because the patron was taking great care to ensure everyone enjoyed their meals. There were lots of things I could have chosen from the menu (being a slightly picky eater) and it was genuinely a surprise to find this nice restaurant in a rural location. Not too far from Mont St Michel either - when visiting there it is worth the minor detour to stay at the Normandy Inn and eat here.
