“Amazing feat of work, great view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

This can be a bit out of the way from Amsterdam but if you are looking for a cool day trip this is the place. Its a very long dijk that was built to separate two bodies of water. This is amazing because at the lookout points you can see the North Sea on one side and the Ijselmeer on the other. Lookout for hidden dirt roads that can lead right up to dijks on the North Sea. You can walk right up onto them for a really cool view. There are various stopping points along the way for great pictures and views and a lookout tower in the middle. The lookout tower has a great and cheap souvenir stand and you can eat there too for pretty cheap. It can be VERY windy there and in the winter can be brutally cold but this is one out of the way place that is well worth the journey. Take the time to read how this was constructed as it is a fascinating feat of architecture and imagination. It truly is amazing what they did and how they did it.

“Dam' hard work!”

An amazing fete of Dutch engineering. Cycling across it is an amazing thing and gives you a real sense of achievement. Would like to try it West to East to see if it helps having the wind at you back!!

“Fine day.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013 via mobile

When I went there, the weather was fine. So, I could see long distance from the monument. It costs 8 euros from Alkmaar station. I could buy
a ticket from the driver. And the driver told me where I got off.

“An amazing ride!”

Great experience and there is even a place to park your car and enjoy the dike from a vantage point. The descriptions were fun and informative. Make sure to stop by if you're on your way through the region - there is even a bus stop at the middle of the dike where the visitors centre is.

“Holland at it's best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

The Dutches are known for their water management, but the Afsluitdijk beat's it all.
A 33 km dyke constructed in the early 50's, closing a piece of the sea. And at the same time connecting the provinces of Friesland and Noord Holland.
Stop at the monument, which is the place where the builders met, building the dyke from both ends. Climb the tower and enjoy a great view over both the North Sea and the newly created lake: IJsselmeer.
