Ilha Grande is only about 4hrs from Rio and a great place to chill after what had been a strenuous couple of weeks charging across South America. The Tropicana is a lovely place, great setting facing the sea, small sub-tropical garden, lovely outdoor restaurant and comfortable bedrooms. Only marked down due to strange heating shower head which had too many wires showing for my liking (but not entirely unknown in this part of the world). Good WiFi and helpful front office staff when I had some hiccups booking my return flight.

I stayed in Pousada Tropicana twice. The first time in January 2010 with my boyfriend. We had a lovely time. The location is great: you enjoy a good, fresh and abundant breakfast right at the seaside! The rooms are clean and comfortable. No strange smells, not moistly. You can relax in the hammocks in the garden. Everything looks so nice. The information given by the receptionist and french owner is very handy.
The second time I visited this great, tropical island in April 2010 I had no doubts and wanted to stay in this pousada again. Again: a great experience again!

Hi,
I stayed 3 nights in november in this place. The bedroom is nice with 1 double and 1 single bed and costs 130 reals. The food is excellent and very diversified (Tbone, lobster, fish), around 30-35 reals, they also have crepes, and soon waffels. Its located 100 feet from the pier, in the center. Also Gerard and his team can help you use shortcuts on your hike to the praias, we even saw a little monkey.

If you like poor service, and mattresses from 40 years ago this is the place to stay. Ilha grande is wonderful, but walk on by this pig-pen of a pousada.

1st - ilha grande standards are different than other places. I have been there several times and understand that a simple room that's clean is a great thing. Having said that; this place falls way below expectations.

- owners; while nice; had their kids overrunning the place. kids toys thrown around like a trailer park. and running all over the place. was by our room playing; at breakfast.

to get to room - you have to walk by restaurant then go to left of the building and follow a trail to stairs into a very rustic building.

- room wasn't ready on time and once we checked in; they had to send somoene to build a bookshelf with 1x4s to put your clothes on; as the only dresser was falling apart.. Simple bed and shower.

- restaurant - went to sit down and dog sleeping under table. Ran out of food for breakfast and everyone was anxiously awaiting anything to be brought out and then attacked to get what they could..

Had the price been alot less; I would have zero complaints; but you can't charge sheraton rates for a shack.
Sorry to be harsh; but I wish others were honest instead of saying its ilha grande and you should expect this. This is one of the worst pousadas there. Go elsewhere.
