Previously eaten at the School House Restaurant and keen to support this local establishment under new management. The menu looked good, if a little ambitious, so we booked a table. The restaurant was almost full when we arrived and we were a little surprised to see only 2 staff covering the bar and all the tables. The starters took almost an hour to arrive and the main course another hour!! Waiting for freshly cooked food is one thing, getting past the point of wanting to eat is quite another. The food was generally good, particularly the crispy duck and the curries, although the fish cakes contained too much potato and not enough fish and the medium rare burger was well done. Although we had originally planned to make more of a night of it, we gave up before desserts and coffee. Whilst the waiter (who worked tirelessly) and waitress tried to be very helpful and explain the difficulties of the evening, (and clearly recognised their short-comings) the whole experience was one not to be repeated in a hurry. They explained that they were unexpectedly busy, even though it was a Friday night; that a large group had turned up without a booking; and that they were short staffed in the kitchen (although I note a previous review also highlighted similar issues). If they were short staffed why did they take extra bookings that evening and over-stretch themselves, so that those that had booked had such a bad time? It suggests poor management. They really need to get their act together or others, like us, will not want to go back. This would be a pity as the village would benefit from another eating place.
