Quite enjoyed our visit here. Obviously if volcanoes and/or geology bore you solid then this is not the place for you. However we are quite interested in both and what we particularly liked was that the displays were fairly modern style (compared to some other museums in Indonesia), with lots of big pictures, diagrams, models and such like. It was also slightly hands on in some bits with buttons you could press and various bits light up. OK, not very adult but I still enjoy doing that! There was a very big hole in the side of the roof in the main hall so some repairs are still needed but generally the Museum was clean and well maintained. On the visit you certainly learn a lot about volcanoes in general as well as Mount Merapi in particular. Most of the descriptions are in English & Indonesian. You also definitely see lots of pictures of the effects of volcanic ash and larva on things and even some items rescued from real eruptions. Mind you, pressing the buttons by the very large map of Indonesia which lights up and shows all the Indonesian volcanoes makes you want to get straight to the airport for the next flight out of the country. OK, most only erupt occasionally so we decided to stay but still.... Anyway, quite a fun visit for us. Also at only IDR 3,000 (approx UK 20 pence) each for the museum ticket (we didn't bother with the video which is extra), even for foreigners, it was extraordinarily good value. Only problem is that the Museum is a bit out of the way. Unless you are in the area anyway, best to visit on your way back to Yogyakarta from Borobudur when it is only a slight detour.
