“Loved this lodge & experience”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

Upon arriving at Sukau Rainforest Lodge you are handed a printed silk sarong and told, "No sarong, no meal!" Of course they won't follow through with this (although we did all wear our sarongs to dinner). I loved that everything was included in one price here - meals,
Accommodation, tours, transfers. The standard of accommodation was far better than I expected- seems you can do a little bit of luxury in the jungle! We stayed in the Agnes Keith room - all rooms are named after explorers and the like who have visited Borneo, so there was also a Sir David Attenborough room. We couldn't believe it when Attenborough himself turned up to dinner one night! He was filming a documentary for Discovery Channel in the area. Apparently this lodge does the best food in the village, hence the visit (he supposedly tried to book accommodation but the lodge was full). The tours were brilliant - we saw orangutans, monkeys, crocs, Pygmy elephants, birds, snakes, monitor lizards... This was the highlight of our trip to Borneo. They will also take you to the orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok (although we were lucky enough to see orangutans in the wild). Our guide was "Jumanji" and we would recommend. All the tours were in boats which is great if you are scared of jungle snakes like me and don't want to be dealing with leeches!

On our way from Sandakan to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, on Kinabatangan River we saw Pygmy elephants, Proboscis monkeys and macaques. What an experience to see these animals all within the 2 1/2 hours boat ride on the first day . Our guide Dean Nexter was very knowledgeable about the rainforest. He loves his job and he has a passion for the environment. He knows his plants very well. We were hoping to see the Rafflesia plant but these are not found in that area.

The first time we saw an orangutan with her baby was from the walkway behind the lodge.
She did warn us not to come too close by breaking off big branches and throwing them down from the tree. We had binoculars to view this magnificent animal. The night river tour was excellent. We saw very colorful birds dozing off in the evening.

The meals at the lodge was very good and the daily soup was nothing less than EXCELLENT.
The staff at the lodge was efficient and very friendly. They all have a smile on their faces
which was very pleasant indeed. We had ' goreng pisang' for our afternoon tea. That was most delicious. Thank you.
It was an experience to stay in the lodge that was entirely depended on solar energy. The place was very clean and rooms were made made up every morning and given clean towels where needed.

Room Tip: My guess is each room has its own character. I have not seen other rooms but we are very happy with...

We had an excellent stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Staff was consistently friendly and helpful. Meals always delicious. Our river excursions were led by enthusiastic guides who could spot wildlife a mile away. Our room was delightfully designed. We had a really great time.

Quaint and comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinabatangan river, a couple of hours upriver from Sandakan. While the ride up to the lodge was brutally hot and the river generally quite wide and without much wildlife to be spotted, the daily and nightly cruises were much more enjoyable. Our guide Nexter was a pleasant and knowledgeable guy who seemed to genuinely enjoy his job. We saw countless proboscis monkeys, macaque, red leaf monkeys, hornbills of all variety and snakes and crocodile, among other birds and wildlife. We didn't luck into any Pygmy elephants or orangutan, but we certainly saw evidence of the former. The walkway out behind the lodge is also a nice way to kill your down time, as the macaques seem particularly thrilled to get close and personal out there.

Rooms were very pleasant and comfortable given the seclusion of the lodge. Food was also very tasty and covered off both Asian and Western tastes.

No complaints.

Don't forget to bring binoculars!

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, aged 4 and 1.5 years, who stayed in Sukau Rainforest Lodge for 2 nights in March as part of a trip organized by Borneo Eco Tours. I can only give the highest marks to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, the staff were super friendly and helpful (even helped us organize for one of their staff to babysit our two daughters so we got a chance to go on the early morning cruise on the river - without charging us anything extra for it), the room was clean and nice, and the food buffet was very good. The guided river tours were fantastic and the guides were great; helpful, knowledgeable, and with good english.

Our stay at the Sulau Rainforest was a brilliant experience, much enjoyed by myself and my twin boys aged 9. I had really wanted to show them the rainforest and its fantastic fauna and flora in all its glory and mystery and we certainly achieved that. Staying in the lodge where Sir David Attenborough had stayed meant a lot - he is a family hero and we mused that our room (number 20) was probably where a cameraman had stayed. The lodge is very child friendly with games of chess and Jenga available, which my boys played with an Australian family staying at the lodge. We took some excellent excursions including a night river safari and a trip up river to see the pygmy elephants, both of which were handsomely rewarded. More nocturnal jungle safaris would have been great - I think one was offered that we were unable to take up. It would have been nice if the shop had sold copies of the DVD of the television series featuring Sir David Attenborough and the film footage made while he stayed at the lodge

Room Tip: Room 17 is where Sir David Attenborough stayed.

Nice rooms with very friendly hotel crews.

People visit this lodge are mostly with tour because the speciality of this hotel is jungle cruise, also it's not easy to visit the lodge by yourself so you need to take either jetty or long distance taxi. So I need to say the location is a bit inconvenient, but the inconvenience is the value of the place.

Same about cleanses, it's not super clean like luxury hotels in cities, but if you are joining the jungle tour, it shouldn't be the big deal for you.

Service was very nice. Good food and very friendly crews.
And the experience of staying this lodge, exploring the jungle, and spending time with those lovely people became absolutely great memory of my life! I would love to visit again.
