Before we got there we went to the Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary where we were very lucky and saw several Orangutans feeding at the platform. We also met Toby the naughty one who stole a visitors camera! We were lucky enough to see two mothers with their young babies.

Then we went by boat from the Sim Sim Jetty to the Abai Jungle lodge. On the way the boat stopped to let us see wild monkeys in the trees The river journey was amazing with a real feel of the wild and the true Borneo. The river is very wide and makes for an interesting journey about an hour and a half.

When we arrived at the Abai Jungle lodge we had a really good lunch with a good selection of Malaysian style food. It was very tasty with coffee and tea as well as water when ever you want it.

Then we went to our room. They are described as basic but we were more than happy with the room. It was very comfortable with own bathroom tea and coffee making in the room. The board walk to the room was covered in the most beautiful flowers which often had humming birds and amazing butterflies visiting them.

We went on a river trip in the afternoon with the most amazing guides who where able to point out so many wild creatures. We saw a wild Orangutan, Proboscis monkeys, Macaques, other monkeys. Kingfishers, Eagles hornbills and a small crocodile as well as other wild creatures.

Then in the early evening we went by boat to see the fire flies . They were very beautiful just like twinkling Christmas tree lights.

Then later in the evening we went for a night walk. This gave a real feel for the jungle at night. We saw many insects and sleeping birds as well as a flying Lemur.

Next morning we went on a trip to the Pitas Oxbow lake. This was quite an experience. We again had a fantastic guide who was able to point out the wild life and answer any questions. While at the lake which was very beautiful we had coffee and biscuits. What a setting for a drink.

Then on our return to the lodge we had a jungle breakfast that was a fantastic selection of food with the added bonus of a wild Orangutan in the nearby trees .

Before we left we saw a wild Baby Orangutan near the boat jetty. What a way to end s uch a great experience. Then we returned to Sandakan by boat.

Once at Sandakan we went to the three story Market a hive of bargains. then on to the beautiful Puh Jih Syh Temple. this was so tranquil with great views. From here we went to the Sabah Hotel for lunch. This was the only poor thing on the trip. Although the place looked good the service in the restaurant was not friendly and the food kept running out. Perhaps if they had put out larger containers then it would have been better.
We were then returned to the Hotel Sandakan for one night before our trip to Mataking Island.

We would like to thank S.I. TOURS SDN. BHD for arranging this trip for us and to all their friendly helpful staff who made the trip so memorable.

A big thank you also to Marcelina at Ultimate Diving for booking the whole three week holiday in Borneo. She is amazing and will book what you want and is prepared to book hotels they have not used before.

We spent one night at Abai Jungle Lodge, taking the boat from Sandakan, and what a great introduction to the Borneo jungle. The lodge itself is basic but absolutely fine. Food is three or four buffet options each meal; always good Malaysian food. There is a bar serving beer and wine – reasonably priced I would say – and a small gift shop. No Internet or phone access.
We came from Abu Dhabi and so hadn’t really considered rain – you can buy plastic ponchos for RM6 each which are pretty effective but the clue is in the name and for future rainforest trips, I will buy some kind of rain cover.
We did a good number of trips from here (and Kinabatangan Lodge, which we went to for our second night). For seeing wildlife, the river boats are fantastic – quiet, which means you can get close, and with a good guide you can see loads. Our guide, Jonathon, was fantastic – we really saw an amazing mix of wildlife.
The highlight was a herd of elephants, from Kinabatangan Lodge, which Jonathon said they see only every few weeks, I think. But even without those we saw loads of monkeys, an orang utan (amazing spot by the boat driver who saw an arm hanging down from about 200m) and loads of birds including hornbills and eagles.
A real treat was the night boat trip. The firefly tree is amazing – literally lights up like a Christmas Tree - and along the way you see loads of birds napping on the trees.
On the second day, we did tree-planting which is good fun and then had lunch in the local village. You get a real feeling that the lodge is trying to put something into the local community, which is great.

This place is located right in the middle of the jungle, perfect for wildlife-spotting river cruises. We went on 3 different trips on the Kinabatangan river, (afternoon / evening and morning) and saw lots of monkeys such as the distinctive proboscis monkey and the long-tailed macaque. We also saw a mother and baby Orang Utan, and lots of birds including egrets. We heard Borneo pygmy elephants but they were too far away so we never saw them. Our guide was a real expert at spotting animals hidden in the distance, and full of knowledge about the animals and the local area.

The lodge rooms are quite basic but clean and have a fan. The buffet food was lovely and plentiful. Also, If you inform staff they will prepare vegetarian dishes. as for extras, there is a shop selling soft drinks / beers and gifts. We only stayed for 1 night so unfortunately we didn't get to go on the trip to the local village or plant a tree. Now we wish we stayed for another night.

Finally I would advise anyone going here to have a wander around the board-walks if you get a chance. We went round and saw a few insects and then as we were heading back noticed a wild orang utan in the tree above us! We were so close to the orang utan, and we just stood in silent awe of it. This experience alone was one of the best moments of my life so far. We asked the staff and even they thought it was unusual for a wild orang utan to come so close to the place. Apparently someone spotted the even rarer Borneo leopard near the board-walks before. As with the river cruises however, you are not guaranteed to see anything but with so much biodiversity in the area it is likely you will see something cool.
