“Great holiday”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

I almost didn't go with Reza Cottages based on some of the reviews here. I am so glad I did. This was one of my best holidays.

The cottages are clean, tidy and air conditioned (but the sea breezes meant you often didn't need it). Yes the shower and hand basin drain into the sea, but that's it. If you're worried, don't use soap...

As good as the tourism marketing is, i was still impressed. I literally woke to 2 or 3 large turtles frolicking (or rather feeding on sea grass) right outside the cottage. All day, with snorkel mask and fins, you are able to swim with them.

Johnny and his family were great. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was ok, typical indonesian, but more than enough. The layout of the cottages along the wharf makes for a lot of interaction with the neighbours, and everyone was very friendly. Wandered through a nearby resort and it seemed quiet and dead by comparison.

I took my early 70's parents on this holiday and they had an awesome time. As I said I was nervous about the location after reading some of the reviews but so glad I went. Highly recommended.

Scott

We checked out all the other places on the island and found this place the nicest. The peer where the bungalows are built on is right above the place where the sea turtles nest. If you jump off the peer you can directly swim with the sea turtles. Breakfast is small- 2 doughnuts but hey it's better than nasi goreng or nothing- the usual in indonesia. The airco is working. Yes the toilet flushes into the sea but if you take a close look you will see that that is actually a place where a lot of fish are coming together, recycling so to speak. Of course- don't throw in your toiletpaper, there is a bin. John is a nice guy that helped us out a lot, he did not overcharge us!

So sad that we listened to the positive reviews and wasted our holiday time and money on this dissappointing homestay... It was just disguisting to see all the waste from the bathroom to go straight into the water... had to go all the way to the other side of the island for swimming...

And the attitude from ''John'' or whatever is his name and his wife - just unbelievable - so disrespectful!!! They treat you like they are God and you are nothing!

Speaking of breakfast - don't even get me started. If that's breakfast, then I'm a monkey. Seriously. I don't think anyone can reach satiety of 2 tiny doughnouts...

Very very dissapointed with this place.
DO NOT stay here...

Ok, so I will start by saying that when we arrived, we were so dissapointed that we wanted to look for another place, but since it was getting dark and we were too tired, we decided to stay and look no further. That was the first mistake. Shoud have moved out.

1. Getting there. DO NOT, I want to emphasise, DO NOT take transfers from John (someone who works there and is the person on the other end of the phone, the number you find on their website), unless you want to pay 7 times more than what you have to. He charges you 700 000 IDR one way (fair enough, this is for a car and boat - 5 people, but still it works out more expensive, never mind the fact that it was only 2 of us and we had to pay 700 000IDR), whereas the actual price is 100 000 IDR for a person (50 000 IDR for a taxi from the airport to Tanjung Batu and 50 000 IDR for a boat from Tanjung Batu to Derawan). There is absolutely no need to prebook this (which we did as we were scared that we would not be able to get a taxi or a boat on the day), but seriously just get it there when you arrive as there are plenty of taxis and boats!

2. The air conditioning was there just for the looks as it did not work (well, it did, but there was no actual difference whether it was turned on or not). Everyone kept the doors and windows open as it was a better way off cooling the room, but since it is so hot, that means you don't really get a proper night's sleep.

3. Everything, I mean all the water from the sink, shower and the toilet, goes straight into the sea. You can check this by flushing down the water in the toilet and then quickly running out on the balcony to see your toilet tissues coming out under the water bungalow and floating in the water. DISGUSTING. Many guests did not go swimming because of this. I mean, imagine if someone has an infective diarrhorea - everyone is bound to have it after swimming in that water...

4. The breakfast is tiny. Literally. You only get 2 small pieces of what they call ''doughnuts'', but they taste nothing like actual doughnuts. When we asked for more food as we were starving, they told us (in a shouting manner) that we could pay more the get bigger breakfast or move out (nice attitude).

4. Boat trips to other islands. John (the same guy again) will offer you to go with him for a ridiculously high price. DO NOT GO with him! Go to Tassik Divers Resort (10-15 min walk from this place) and you can go to other islands for a smaller price + bigger boat + lunch included + snorkeling equipment included!

5. Nobody speaks english (not even a single word), apart from John (the guy who is after your money for the transfers and boat trips).

6. They don't change your towels or bed sheets unless you ask them to. Even then, the lady looks at you as if you just returned from the Moon that you want such thing! Also, no bed covers, so you have to take your own...

7. There is no hot water. Fair enough, it is hot and you don't necessarily need it for washing your hands, but it is quite difficult to wash your hair in a cold water... Also, the water sometimes dissapeared and then we were told to wait half an hour for the other water tank to refil.. quite annoying if you are all salty after swimming in the sea and want to take a shower. Furthermore, there was no soap, never mind the shampoo or shower gel. So you have to take these with yourself if you want to stay in this place.

However, I must say the turtles were amazing! The only thing that made it worth going there. You can really swim with them! We also followed the locals to watch a turtle lay eggs as well as to see baby turtles going in the sea! Amazing experience!

Overall, it's worth going to Derawan if you are after the turtles, but DO NOT stay in this homestay! I would advise to go to Tassik Divers Resort as everyone is very nice and welcoming over there, they speak good english, have a proper breakfast, the rooms are really nice with hot water.

Room Tip: DO NOT STAY IN THIS PLACE! Go to Tassik Divers Resort or any other place on the island!

Fantastic place! It takes some effort to get to Derawan, but if you're staying at Reza you get a piece of paradise back. We had a nice big bungalow on the water. We got coffee, tea, hot water and cups together with the breakfast on our veranda and could make our own coffee and tea the whole day. The bungalow has two verandas, on both sides, so there's always shade. The turtles are so abundant and the water is so clear that you can spot them from the veranda. Snorkling requires a walk of.. 5 m! Derawan is a great tranquil place. Although it took us 3 days to get there, it was worth the hassle. Plan a long time there, because you won't want to leave.

Room Tip: All bungalows are great, but ours had the privilege of not having any direct neighbours (same price...

Where should i start!
wow i just loved this place i mean i takes some effort to get there
but once you make it it is going back to the roots! (wherever you came from)
such a simple life waking up swimming with turtles strolling the beach enjoy the sun EASY life
john the owner took us to go see the turtles lay their eggs at night ( as many before us also have done ) its one of those things you just need to do when you there...the island is small locals are super super nice rooms where spacious and clean...wish they only had like a full on breakfast you do get tea and a piece of bread but wish there was more...i ordered an omelette one of those morning and i paid something like €1,20 what i think is ridiculous but hey!
so defenitly a good place to stay if you ever make it too the island called derawan!
superb all and all!

We spent 3 days here and we did a trip to see the manta and the lake of pulau kakaban.
People are really nice and the bungalows just above the sea are great ! the island is very small and you feel really in holidays, like a postcard !
The restaurant is good, the ikan bakar asam manis is nice !

Go there, for the place but also for the people, very friendly !
