If you're travelling to Sumatra, I highly recommend to take the time and visit Lake Toba and places around there!
If you're planning on going there you'd better book a homestay or a hotel in tuk-tuk! Since it's the touristic area, most hostles, homestays, reataurants and cafés are located here!
We went to tuk-tuk from berastagi but you can also go from Medan! both ways are almost 4 hrs by drive. Since there was no public bus from where we stayed to there, we took a touristic bus which came and pick us up at the homestay! We were 5 people in a big car except for the driver (like a shared taxi)! He dropped us off in Parapat and from there we took a ferry to tuk-tuk!
Almost every couple of steps in tuk-tuk, there are places to rent you scooters and motor bike! If you're familiar with how to drive, it's really great experience! To take the scooter and ride around the island and also main land (if you have time)! We took the road through the forest! Even though it was like 45 minutes longer but it is so worth the ride!
On your ride you get beautiful views of the Lake! Just be very careful with the driving and with the mosquitos!

Took a guided tour with Mr Mike (+62 821-6067-1730). He was really friendly, helped us a lot when communicating with locals at attractions and restaurants. He was also familiar with most of the attractions and food places in Berastagi and Lake Toba so we were able to get many recommendations from him. Many of the activities are quite physically demanding though, will recommend for younger or more active groups :)

Indonesia is not often thought of for its tourist locations, with exception of Bali which so many tourist have trashed over the years, but it has so many gems and Lake Toba in Selingit, Java is one such example. It’s a startlingly beautiful lake formed from heavy rainfall in a dormant volcano. The Indonesians have started to see the benefit and there are many great tourist hotels here, though I didn’t get the pleasure of staying in one. Food is great, scenery is great and the monkeys are funny.
The big issue for the region is the state of the roads and the traffic congestion. This area could be the St Tropez of Sth East Asia if the government got the roads sorted. Definitely one to explore but be patient.

A very nice place for short vacation!
From Silangit airport, take taxi - 400k per car but u may share with other tourists.
About 2.5hours from airport to parapat jetty due to slow traffic.
Then take a boat 20k per person and they will send you to the nearest jetty at your hotel.

Just rent an eco powerful scooter around 100-120k rupiah for 1 day including full tank petrol. then took about 7hours for 1 complete a round of lake toba. A breathtaking view from the top of mountain. Chilling and breezing

Happy holiday!! Enjoyyy

We motorbikes around Lake Toba. It is a stunning place and a must visit if in North Sumatra. Like most of Sumatra however it is let down by litter. Local Indonesians will throw it out of cars, off boats and on the street without any understanding. More education needs to be given. Please consider your use of single use plastics when in the area.
